D. 1. Dispatch of Capt. William Fenner to the Lord High Admiral [Charles, Lord Howard of Effingham], or, in his absence, to Sir Francis Drake, reporting that, sailing from Dover on the 19th [Aug.], he arrived off "New Haven Roade [sc. Havre le Grace] on the 21st " and "discovered therein ryding a greate Spaniarde"....... who "came from the Hoggs [sc. La Hogue] into that roade six dayes before, purposinge to recover Dunkercke if he mighte," etc.; St. Ellins [St. Helens, I. of Wight], 25 Aug. 1588. Unsigned. f. 42. The vessel which Capt. Fenner [of the "Aid "] in company with" Captain Ryman [George Raymond, of the "Elizabeth Bonaventure"] and "Capten Bakar" [Christopher Baker, of the "Foresight"] had been sent to locate was doubtless the "Santa Anna," the flagship of the Biscay fleet, which had been separated from the Armada and had taken refuge in the roads of Havre (Cal. of State Papers, Spanish, 1587-1603, and J. S. Corbett's Drake. and the Tudor Navy, 1899, ii. pp. 28, 150). At the foot and on the back are notes by [Henry Ratcliffe, Earl of] Sussex [Lord Lieutenant of co. Southampton], Portsmouth, 25 Aug., that he had received this letter from Fenner and now sent it on to the L. Admiral, "hast, hast, post haste for lyfe." 2. Draft, for the King's sanction, of an order respecting the course to be "taken and observed for ye settling the militia in ye kingdom of Scotland (if it be desired) as we have consented to for the kingdom of England," the words underlined being altered by a marginal note in the King's hand to "as shall be agreed on and setled," with a further note by him at the end, "For the rest take heed to mend the Magnificat," a proverbial expression meaning "Do not meddle in matters too great for you"; [1642]. Endorsed by Sir E. Nicholas, Secretary of State, "The contents of a proposicion resolved to be delivered in on Monday morning." f. 44.
3. Draft by Sir Edward Hyde, Lord Chancellor [Earl of Clarendon 1661], of a letter from Charles II. to the House of Lords enclosing his Declaration, which will show "how greate a trust wee repose in you for the procuringe and establishinge a blessed peace and security for the Kingdome," etc.; "Given at our Court at Breda the 4th /14 Aprill, 1660." f. 45.
4. "A particular of the charge of 7213 horse yearely in 62 Troops... heerein proportioned uppon the counties, etc., in England and Wales according to the rates which they paide monthly towards the assess of 70,000 a month"; [? circ. 1660]. Endorsed by Lord Clarendon, "Estimate of the Army." f. 47.
5. "Præludium," consisting of a dialogue between Gentleman, Histrio, Captain, Lover, and two Rovers, beginning: "Gent. Ho, histrio, I thought a presse had swallowed you all," and having the following passage: Gent..........What play have you to-day? Hist. One newly reviv'd, the "Hungry Courtier." Endorsed by Lord Clarendon "T. Randall [? Thomas Randolph, d. 1635] after ye last Plague." Neither the prelude nor the play is in Randolph's Collected Works., ed. W. C. Hazlitt, 1875. f. 54.
6. Report by a commander of one of the ships in the Duke of York's squadron of his movements in the battle of Lowestoft, 3 June, 1665: "I made saile and came under ye Duke's sterne. Sir Wm. Pen waved me to leeward, and there I lay uppon ye Duke's quarter when Updam was comming and Blew up; then we tacked to get into our station againe, still being a Head of ye Duke, where I passed a Broade side into ye Orania untill such time as shee strooke to Sr John Lawson," etc. f. 56.
7. Joint-letter from [Gen. William Cadogan, Earl] Cadogan, and [Sir] C[harles] Whitworth, Plenipotentiaries at the Hague, to Adm. Sir John Norris on the subjects of trade to the Baltic, the adherence of the States General to the Quadruple Alliance, etc.; Hague, 21 June/2 July, 1718. (For copies of Sir J.
