YEAR-BOOKS of pleas at York and other collected pleas, temp. Edw. I [1272-1307]. In French. The arrangement of the book is not very clear, a large proportion of the pleas being undated or headed simply "placita vetera." Interspersed with these are various dated reports, 23 and 26-30 Edw. I., most, or perhaps all, of them at York and chiefly before John de Mettingham or Ralph de Hengham also a report of the Kent eyre of 21 Edw. I. under John de Berwick. Many of the York pleas occur also in Add. MS. 31826. The dated pleas begin as follows: (a) Kent eyre, 21 Edw. 1. f. 67 b;- (b) Pleas (York?), Trin. 23 Edw. I. f. 102b;-(c) York, Mich. and Hil. 26 Edw. I. ff. 111, 113;-
(d) York (?), 27 Edw. I. f. 6;-(e) York, Easter and Mich.
28 Edw. 1. ff. 31;-(f) York, East. and Mich. 29 Edw. I. ff. 118, 134;-(g) York, Hil. and East. 30 Edw. I. ff. 147 b, 181. A few pleas have names of counsel attached, possibly as having supplied the reports, viz. Malmes. [sc. Robert de Malberthorpe], f. 57, [John del Westcote, ff. 100, 108. An early form of the Verteres Narraciones, a collection of formulae for counts, etc., in pleading, is inserted without heading at f. 169. For other forms of this collection see below, 37658 and Royal MS. 11 A. viii, f. 159, Harl. MS. 947, f. 107, and Add. MS. 35095, f. 3. A later forum was printed by Pynson (1515, 1516) and Tottell (1561) as Novae Narrations. The forms here are of Edw. I.'s time. in Later hands are (a) Writ and pleading in a suit between Joh. fil. Joh. fil. Alaini de Wolverton [d. 1341] and Will Blaket about estovers in Chalfont St. Giles, co. Buck. f. 194 b;-(b) Writ from Tho. de Brugge, "senescallus domine Elizabethe domine la Despensere" [widow of Giles de Badlesmere, Baron Badlesmere, who d. 1338, and wife of Hugh Le Despenser, Baron Despenser.] to the bailiff of the borouoh of Fairford [co. Glouc.] to levy from the goods of Thomas Tanner an amercement due to the abbot of Cirencester. f. 195;-(c) A writ, temp. Rich. II. f. 37 b;-(d) Names of the murderers of [Thomas of Woodstock] Duke of Gloucester, 22 (sic, for 21) Rich. II. [1397], see John Hall's confession, Rot. Parl.
1 Hen. IV., p. 452. f. 194 b;-(e) Note of a sale of plates, etc., by Will. Warde to Tho. Morys, Apr. 3 Hen. IV. [1402]. f. 195;-
(f) Medical recipes and charm against fever, in English, early 15th cent. f. 3. In the binding are fragments of accompt-rolls of the manors of Bourne [Eastbourne, co. Suss.], Mardele [Mardley Bury in Welwyn, co. Hertf.], Hechinton [in Ripe, co. Suss.] and Laughton, co. Suss., belonging to [Giles de] Badlesmere [Baron Badlesmere d. 1338]. Vellum; ff. 196. 9½ in. x 7 in. Early xiv. cent. Belonged probably to Giles, Lord Badlesmere; afterwards to Willelmus Martyn de Grayis Inne (15th cent.), [Sir] Thomas Frowyk [Chief Justice of the Common Pleas, d. 1506], and Thomas Jakes, who married Frowyk's widow Elizabeth. Some notes (ff. 3, 98, etc.) are apparently in the hand of Sir John Savile, Baron of the Exchequer (d. 1607). Binding (14th cent.) of wooden boards covered with doe-skin. Savile sale-cat. 1861, lot. 20; Phillipps MS. 26065 (sale-cat. 1908, lot 252).
