YEAR-BOOKS, 21, 38-50 Edw. III. and 1 Hen V., with a fragment of 7 Rich. II, in French, as follows:-
1. 21 Edw. III. Differs not inconsiderably from the text of Sawbridge's edition (1679) and from Add. MS. 22552. f. 5.
2. 38, 39 Edw. III. Differs to a like degree from the edition and MSS., viz., for the 38th year Add. MSS. 22552, 25187, Hargrave MS. 297, for the 39th year Add. MS. 6717. f. 57.
3. Mich.-East., 1 Hen. V. The terms seem to be wrongly dated as Henry's regnal years begin in March. The pleas correspond to Sawbridge's edition as follows: (a) "Mich.," equivalent to Sawbridge's Hilary pleas 3, 4, and Easter pleas 1-4;--(b) "Hill" Sawb. East. pleas 5-8, Trinity and Michaelmas as far as plea 24; -(e) "Pasch.," Sawb. Mich. pleas 25-28. Harley MS. 5144 has nearly. the same pleas, but heads them all Mich. 1 Hen. V.,and Hargr. MS.1 has an arrangement different from any of these. f. 114.
4. Fragment (one page) of Trinity, 7 Rich. II. Beg. "Si bref soit porte vers un." f. 128 b.
5. Hil. 40-Trin. 50 Edw. III., resembling in general the reports in Sawbridge's edition and MSS. as follows: (a) 40 Edw. III., cf. Add. MSS. 22552, 26747, Hargr. MS. 297. f. 129;-(b) 41, 42 Edw. III., cf. Add. 26747, Hargr. 297. In the latter year the terms are differently divided. f. 163 b;-(c) 44 Edw. III., cf. Add. 26747. f. 208;-(d) 45 Edw. III., cf. Add. 6717, 26747, Harg. 297. The terms are differently divided. f. 241;-(e) 43 Edw. III., agreeing pretty closely with Add. 26747 and including many pleas printed in Sawbridge's appendix to the year. f. 258;-(f) 46 Edw. III., cf. Add. 26747, Hargr. 297. f. 293;-
(g) 47 Edw. III. In the edition there are no pleas for Hil. or Easter terms. Here, none are given for Hil. but two for Easter. The arrangement of pleas in the other two terms is different. Add. 26747 gives (f. 165) a few pleas without specifying the term. f. 318 b;-(hj 48, 49 Edw. III. cf. Add. 6717, 26747. f. 351;-
(i) 50 Edw. III., incomplete. As in 26747, the terms are not divided. Breaks off in what is printed as plea 9 of Trin. term. f. 399. Paper and (outer and inner sheets of quires) vellum; ff. 414.
16 in. x 11½ in. Early xv. cent. English 15th cent. binding (much injured), of oak boards covered with stamped leather and brass bosses. The centre of the side consists of 14 x 5 impressions taken in turn from three square stamps, viz. IHS., fleur de lys and imperial eagle; these are framed with impressions of an oblong floral ststamp. Outside the frame are long flower-sprays with rosestamps of five petals, and the corner-pieces are crossed boat-shaped stamps making a four-pointed star, with triangular stamps between the cusps. On the back the rose-stamp is used in lozene-shaped compartments. Belonged (f. 5) to Sir Thomas Frowyk, Chief Justice, and to Thomas Jakes (cf. 37657); in 1547 to Geoffrey Caldwell (f. 1 b); later to William Fietewode, Recorder of London (D 1594), Sir Edmund Anderson, Chief Justice of the Common Pleas (d. 1605), George Petre (cf. 37658), and (in 1829) Sir Thomas Phillips. Phillips MS. 7085 (sale-cat. 1908, lot 256).
