LETTER-BOOK or "Register (Tome I) of all the Earle of Melfort his Majestys principall secretary of state his Letters and Memorials dispatched during his Negotiation at Court of Rome from his arrival there, the l0th of December, 1689, to the 2d of March, 1690." This embassy of John Drummond, 1st Earl and titular Duke of Melfort, on behalf of James II. and Louis XIV. lasted till September, 1691 (v. 37662, f. 263 b), and three other volumes of the same register of his letters, immediately following the prestent MS. and carrying the correspondence as far as 13 Dec. 1690, are now Landsdowne MSS. 1163 A-C. They were originally numbered 2-4, but these figures have been altered to 1-3. Melfort's letters in this volume are to James II, Queen Mary of Modena, [Rinaldo] Cardinal d'Este, [Charles Colbert] Marquis de Croissy, Secretary of State, [Henry Waldegrave] Baron Waldegrave (till his death in Feb. 1690), [Lewis] Innes, Principal of the Scots' College at Paris, and various Jacobites at the Court of St. Germain and elsewhere. Included (ff. 15, 46, 67, 71, 133) are five memorials to the Pope [Alexander VIII]. A list of the persons addressed is given at f. 1 b.
