GUILD BOOK of the Fraternity of the Trinity and SS. Fabian and Sebastian in St. Botolph's church, Aldersgate, founded 51 Edw. III. [1377] and refounded by Dame Joan Asteley, nurse of Henry VI., Robert Cawode, Clerk of the Pipe, and Thomas Smith, 9 July, 24 Henr. VI. [1446] (Royal licence, f. 73). See Stow, Survay of London, ed. 1598, p. 247. The contents are:-
1. Calendar, with obits of benefactors inserted. The name of St. Thomas [Becket] the Martyr and the title "papa" are erased.
2. Rules of the Fraternity. The first two leaves are missing, but the rules are printed in full by Toulmin Smith in English Gilds, Early Engl. Text Soc., 1870, p. 9, from a return made in 1389. Engl. f. 9.
3. Lists of the members with their yearly payments, beginning with the original members. There are lists for many of the years of Richard II. and Henry IV., for 2 and 3 Henry V. (f. 23), 15 Henry VII. (f. 94) and 1 Edward VI. (f. 95). William, Lord Willoughby [de Eresby] and his wife, William, Lord Ros and his wife, Thomas de Berkyng, Abbot of St. Osyth's, and other interesting names occur (f. 20) under 10 Henry IV. [1408-1409]. Engl. f. 12. The lists are headed "Gode breperen and susteren it is forto weten and knowen pat pe bygynnynge of pis breperhode of grete deuocioun euery man paynge a peyny forto fynde xiii. taperes aboute pe sepulere of Criste at Estre in pe chirche of seynt Botuphe wt oute Aldersgate in Loundoun After pat prouze more gretter deuocioun and sterynge vnto pe worschippe of god it was yturne in to a fraternyte of pe holy Trynyte nouzt wip stondynge pe fyndynge euery zere pe mayntenynge of pe forsayde xiii. taperes . of pe whiche breperhode pes were pei." 4. Accompts of the Fraterility, 21-34 Henry VI. [1443-1456]. Engl. f. 24. The accompts for 21-23 Henry VI., which are cancelled, are given in detail, including "Costes of pe plee of pe Sarrasyn hed" and expenses for repairs in houses owned by the Fraternity, a rental of which occurs at f. 76. For earlier accompts see art. 6.
5. Deeds of the property of the Fraternity. Lat. and Engl. f. 36. Included are the wills of benefactors and an acknowledgement (f. 74) by the incoming Master and Wardens of the receipt of the moveable property, dat. 18 June 3 Edw. IV. [1483], with many interesting items, including a missal described (sec. fol. "Aspergitur aqua"), silver-gilt enamelled chalices, "a blake registre boke wt a kalander in pe which is writen pe dedes... concernyng pe lyvelode of pe breperhede" (either the present MS. or its source), a vellum roll containing pageants, etc. Another. inventory is on f. 97 b.
6. Accompts of the Fraternity, 10-20 Hen. VI. [1432-1441]. f. 90. A leaf is lost after f. 90, containing part of the expenses of 1433- 1436 and the whole of the accompts from 1 Aug. 1436 to 31 July, 1438. Vellum (ff. 1-8, 98) and Paper (watermark a fish); ff. i. + 98.
11¼ in. x 8¼ in. (ff. 3-8), 11½ in. x 8¼ in. (ff. 9-97). xv. cent. The calendar, rules and the earlier lists have initials in blue and red, and the headings of the earlier lists are rubricated. Phillipps MS. 3795 (sale-cat. 1908, lot 486).
