CHARTULARY of Waltham Abbey, co. Essex. Latin. Compiled early in the 16th cent., the elaborate initials being by the same hand as those in Harl. MS. 3739, written by Robert Fuller, the last abbot, who received the temporalities 4 Sept. 1526 (his name occurs here in an initial, f. 135 b). The abbey was surrendered to the king 31 March, 1540. A note in a modern hand on f.1 of the Harley MS. reads "In all 5 Tomes. Tom. 1," and this no doubt is one of the other volumes. The charters of Edward the Confessor (f. 6), Henry II. (f. l0 b) and Richard I. (f. 15 b) are printed in Dugdale's Monasticon, ed. 1830, vol. vi. p. 61 sqq., from Cotton MS. Tib. C. ix. Included are transcripts of the perambulations of the forest of Essex in 9 Hen. III. [1224-5] (ff. 4 b, 221 b) and 28 Edw. I. [1300] (ff. 1 b, 217 b, translated by W. R. Fisher in The Forest of Essex, p. 393), of the confirmation by Edward I. of the Charter of the Forest of Henry III. (f. 222 b), and of a plea "De reparacione poncium in co. Herteford," 1278 (f. 275). At f. 284 is an incomplete index (17th cent.). Paper; ff. 284. 1 ft. 1.3/8 in. x 9.3/8 in. Circ. 1526-1540. Elaborate initials with grotesques drawn with a pen. Original binding of wooden boards covered with leather blindtooled: a panel of lozenge-shaped compartments containing flowers, the frame formed by four intersecting bands, decorated with beasts, birds, bees and flowers. Fittings for clasps. Roger Dodsworth owned a Chartulary of Waltham in 1639 and Lord Wimbledon a Register in 1632 (Tanner, Notitia Monastica, ed. 1787, Essex, No. XLV.) The present MS. many be one of these. Phillipps MS. 13892 (sale-cat. 1908, lot 744).
