"THE HYSTORYE....of the howse and barons of Cobhame, of whiche lyne were thre famous distincte famelyes, being the loordes of Cobhame, the lordes of Rondale [Rundale, co. Kent] and the lordes of Sterborowe Castell [Sterborough] in Surreye, collected by Francis Thynn a treatise expanded from Thynne's contribution to the revision of Holinshed's chronicles by John Hooker and others, for which see Holinshed's Chronicles, 1586, iii. p. 1499, and Dict. of Nag. Biog., s.v. Thynne. Holograph. The additions consist mainly of sententious prologues to the separate lives, but include also the texts of various inquisitions post mortem and some translations of Latin verses into English verse by Thynne (ff. 36 b, 39 b, 42 b). On f. 2 is a dedication to Henry Brooke, Lord Cobham, dat. Clerkenwell Green, 20 Dec. 1598, in the lifetime of whose father, William Brooke, Lord Cobham (d. 1597) the treatise was begun, and his shield of arms with all its quarterings in tincture is on f. 1 b. The arms of the Cobhams and their wives are given throughout in tincture. The first draft much corrected is in Add. MS. 12514, f. 56. Paper; ff. iii. + 60. Folio. Tooled vellum covers. Book-plate and signature (f. iii.) of Craven Ord (sale-cat. 1829, lot 539, sold to Payne). Phillipps MS. 21984 (sale-cat. 1908, lot 187).
