THEOLOGICAL tracts and exempla in Latin, viz.:-
1. Distinctiones secundum ordinem alphabeti: a treatise entitled "Summula que vocatur abstinentia" or "Flos theologie" in the table of contents of Royal MS. 8 C. xvi., and printed (Paris, 1512, Strassburg, 1518) as Dictionarius Pauperum (with "paruuin dictionarium alias de abstinentia" as alternative titles). Other copies are in Roy. MSS. 8 C. viii. and 9 A. x. It also exists in a large number of MSS. in French libraries (see Hauréau, Not. et Extr., vi. pp. 264, 270), and appears to be the work of Nicolas de Byard, a French Franciscan (Hauréau, i. p. 206, ii. p. 91). Beg. imperf. (in the middle of cap. 1, cf. 8 C. xvi. f. 8 b): "quid prodest corpus attenuare." f. 1.
2. "Liber de quatuor virtutibus" (so title), al. "Liber de forma honeste vite" (colophon): i.e. S. Martini, Dumiensis episcopi, Formula Honestae Vitae,printed in Migne,lxxii.col.21. Prologue beg. "Gloriosissimi atque transquillissimo regi mironi"; text beg. "Qvatuor uirtutum species." f. 106.
3. "Liber petri alfonsi" (title), al. "Clericalis doctrina petri auulsi" (colophon): the Disciplina Clericalis of Petrus Alfunsi. For other copies see Cat. of Romances, ii. pp. 235-247, and Add. MS. 33991, f. 27. Invocation beg. "Dixit petrus alfunsus seruus christi"; introduction, "Deus ergo in hoc opusculo mihi sit in auixilium"; and text, "Enoch igitur philosophus qui lingua arabica cognominatur edrich." f. 108b.
4. "Tabula exemplorum de habundancia adoptionum ad omnenm materiam in sermonibus secundum ordinem alphabeti ordinàta": a collection of tales for the use of preachers, arranged according to subjects in alphabetical order, in 150 chapters, from Accidia to X pi ascencio. Another copy of this work, which seems to have been composed in France towards the end of the 13th cent., is in Add. MS. 18351; both are described in the Cat. of Romances, iii. pp. 414, 422. Beg. "Accidis nota accidiosus est sicut canis famelicus." f. 125. Vellum ; ff. i. + 194. 9½ in. x 6 in. Mid. xiv. cent. In double columns, with headings in red, and initials in red and blue. On f. 124b (16th cent.), "Item to Eles Shaw ijd. Item to Hew Rauyn jd." On f. 147 are more English scribblings, 16th cent., mentioning Wollaton, co. Notts. "Phillipps MS. 1382," inside cover (but in the folio Catalogue of the Phillipps Library p.16, No. 1382, one of the MSS. "Ex Abbatia S. Gliislain" is described as "Vita Servatii, vell., saec. xiii.," and the present MS. does not appear to be entered). Phillipps sale-cat. 1908, lot 605.
