FEODARY of the manors and lands of John de Segrave, Baron Segrave e (d. 1353), in cos. Leicester, Warwick, Derby, Huntingdon, etc.; with an alphabetical index of places in a later hand at f.3 b. Names, rents and services of tenants are detailed, and in some cases the extent of the demesene lands. At f. 98 is an account, in French, of the tenures by which all the Segrave lands were held, being a transcript of an older record. The words "Scrobik fu de heritage ma mere" seem to date this original in the time of Nicholas de Segrave (d. 1295), with whose mother Amabilia, dau. of Robert de Chacombe, the lands in Strubby, co. Linc., came into the Segrave family (see Harl. MS. 4748, f. 22). The returns of her tenants quoted on f. 109 b and dated 25 and 30 Edw. I. are taken from the same source. The same list translated into Latin occurs in the Harley MS. and is there said to be from the "liber albus de extentis terrarum dominii de Segrave" (f. 1), no doubt the record used in the compilation of the present MS. The text ends (f. 110) with a record of homages, the last of which is dated 19 June, 1338. In the space below are the arms of Mowbray, gules a lion rampant arg. (Elizabeth, dau. of John de Segrave, married circ. 1363 John, Lord Mowbray). At the end are later additions, viz.: (a) "The meeres betwene Bratby [Brettby] and Newhall," in co. Derby in a hand of the late 15th cent. f. 111;-(b) Grant by Reginald Serewnd of Cambridge to Ida, late wife of Stephen de Segrave (d. 1241), of lands in the marsh of Wysebeche [Wisbeach, co. Camb.], in a hand of the end of the 14th cent. f. 111 b;-(c) Pedigree of the holders of the Segrave lands from Gilbert fil. Herewardi, "tempore H. fil. imperatoris," to John fil. Johannis [de Mowbray] "temp. Henr. VI." (1432-1461). f. 112 b. Vellum; ff. 112. 7½ in. x 5½ in. xiv. cent. (1338-1353). Some of the leaves mutillated at the edges. "Ex Bibl. Manwaring of Peover" (pencil note by Sir T. Phillipps, f. 2). Phillipps MS. 18492 (sale-cat. 1908, lot 661).
