CHARTULARY of the Praemonstratensian Abbey of Cockersand, co. Lanc., written by Robert de Lacheford in 1268 (see f. 5 b), with some later additions down to temp. Hen. VIII. Edited for the Chetham Society, New Series, parts 38-40, 43, 56, 57 (1898-1905), by William Farrer. A transcript of the whole MS., made for Christopher Towneley in 1661, is Add. MSS. 32099. Copies of some of the documents made, also for Towneley, from the original charters, and containing the witnesses, who are not given in the chartulary, are in Add. 32104 and were used for the Chetham Soc. edition. The original contents are classified as (1) "Priuilegia communia," three general Praemonstratensian papal privileges, one of Innocent IV. (Potthast, Regesta, 12482), the other two of Gregory IX. (Potth. 8107, dated here "anno septimo"), and another, "Cum ad hooc" 8 Id. Jun. anno sexto, not in Potth.). ff. 6 b and 6;- (2) "Priuilegia," papal charters to Cockersand or Prémontré. The first, by Clement III. in 1190, confirming the refoundation of the Cockersand hospital as a Praemonstratensian house, is not in Jaffe's Regesta. The others, some at least of which must be later additions, are Potth. 5545, 5991, 12295, 20592, with two of Gregory IX., one of Alexander IV. and one (5 June, 1274) of Gregory X., which are not in Potth. f. 7;- (3) "Carte regis," sc. of John and Henry III. f.14;- (4) "Confirmaciones." f.17;-

On the flyleaf (f. 164) is a memorandum respecting "the nombre of evidences under their seales commaundet by the kyngs visitours by iniunction to be delyueryed into the hande of Mr. Thomas Crumwell beyng cheffe visitour citra festum pasche anno regis Henrici octaui xxvii [1536]." The actual number is cut out. At f. ii. is inserted a drawing, from an impression in the Augmentation Office, of the seal of the Abbey, by John Weld. Vellum (except ff. i-iii.) ; ff. iii. + 164. 11¾ in. x 8in. A.D.1268. On f. iii. is a pencil-note: "This; book was given to me by Miss English, 1861. It was left to her by will with the rest of the library at Thurnham by Elizabeth Dalton (my cousin), who was the last of the family," etc., signed T. R. G. (?), perhaps Sir Thomas Rookwood Gage, Bart., of Hengrave, but the MS. is not in his sale-catalogue, June, 1867. Bookplate of arms of Thomas Brooke, F.S.A.
