CHARTULARY of Fountains Abbey, co. York, vol. iii., containing places beginning K-M. Of this series, compiled in the 15th cent., the portions known to exist (v. J. R. Walbran, Memorials of Fountains Abbey, Surtees Soc., 1863, 1878, vol. ii. pp. 93-101) are as follows: Vol. i., A-C, is Cotton MS. Tiberius C. xii. Vol. ii., D-J, is noticed in Hist. MSS. Commission, 6th Report, 1877, p. 358, as in possession of Sir Henry Ingilby, of Ripley Castle, co. York; some leaves, however, had been abstracted from it at an early date and are noted by Walbran as at Studley Royal. Possibly these leaves are referred to in ( 17th cent.) notes in the present MS. (ff. 200, 361 b) as in the possession of Sir Stephen Procter. Another note on f. iii. b. by T. Pulleyn, dated 1751, is as follows: "Sir John Ingilby has another volume, and I have seen an other in Doctor Drakes possession." None of the volumes after M seem to be known at present; but an abridgment of the whole series of charters A-Z (including many not in this series), made under Abbot Marmaduke in 1509, is now Add. MS. 18276. At the end of the present MS. Charles Fairfax has inserted (ff. 362-367) six paper. leaves, "Mete vel limites manerii siue dominii de Rippon, anno Dom. 1481[-2], 21 Edw. 4ti," in a late 16th cent. hand, with note, "This boundary was giuen mee by Mr George Naylor of Rippon the last day of October, 1655." Vellum (except ff. i.-iii., 362-367) ; ff. iii. + 368. 11 ¾ in. x 8¼ in. xv. cent. Sec. fol.. "rardo de Ponteburg." A note of the number of leaves (f. 361) is dated 12 Oct. 1595. Two notes (ff. 1, 361) record that the MS. was perused by the antiquary Richard Gascoigne, 9 Dec. 1619. It afterwards belonged to Colonel Charles Fairfax, younger brother of the second Lord Fairfax, apparently by gift of Henry Wythens, 21 Dec. 1644; later, by gift of Miss Fairfax, 28 June, 1751, to Thomas Pulleyn, of Burley, co. York, who married a daughter of John, son of Charles Fairfax. In or before 1843 (f. 162) it was in the hands of Sir Thomas Phillipps (MS. 11122, sale-cat. 1898, lot 592). Bookplates of arms of Thomas Pulleyn and Thomas Brooke. Rough calf binding, done for T. Pulleyn, 1751.
