BREVIARY, of Cologne use, as appears from the Calendar, from the offices in honour of St. Peter, the Three Kin", and St. Heribert (see below, artt. 1, 4, 6, 7), and from the rubric "Sciendim quod sic seruatur de vna virgine in maiori ecclesia Colonensi," etc., on f. 75 b. The contents are as follows:-(1) Calendar. In red are Gereon, the Eleven Thousand Virgins, and Severin, Bishop [of Cologne]; in black, Heribert, Archbishop of Cologne, Maternus, Evergislus, and Cunibert, Bishops [of Cologne], and Cordula [one of St. Ursula's companions]; also "Obitus tercii regis" (11 Jan.) and "Translacio trium regum" (23 July). f. 1;-(2) Psalms for matins throughout the week, with antiphons, etc. f. 7;-(3) Commune Sanctorum. f. 68 b;-(4) Offices of the Virgin, St. Peter, and St. Antony (with rubric "De regibus quere in fine libri" on f. 77). f. 75b;-(5) Temporale, from Advent to the octave of Corpus Christi. f. 79;-(6) Proprium Sanctorum, from the Vigil of St. Andrew to St. Albinus (including Heribert on f. 298 b). f. 252;-(7) "Sic obseruandum est de Regibus feria iiia." f. 310 b. Colophon (f. 312 b), "per me Jacobum Kraen de Dulken [Dülken, near Kempen], anno Domini Mccccxxx sexto, die xviiia Marcii." This only applies however, to ff. 184-312; the preceding part is by a different hand of the same period. Paper to f. 183 inclusive, the rest paper and vellum mixed; ff. ii. + 312. 5½in. x 3.7/8 in. A.D. 1436. Bound in brown leather, stamped with roundels of the martyrdom of St. Agatha and of two goats affonted browsing on a tree, and lozenges of the fall of Adam, of St. Antony, and of a lion rampant, arranged in panels, with rosettes in the intervening spaces, and with a roll-stamp border of scrolland-flower pattern; remains of brass clasp-fittings.
