SPECULUM SAPIENTIAE, etc.:-
1. "Breuiloquium principum et philosophorum, et est vna pars ipsius Gallensis": the "Breviloquium de quatuor virtutibus cardinali bus" or "de virtutibus antiquorum principum et philosophorum" of Joannes Wallensis. Other copies are in Royal MSS. 5 A. xii., f. 1, 10 A. ix., f. 71 b, and 12 E. xxi., f. 27, Harley MS. 632, f. 25, and Burney MS. 360, f. 3; see also A. G. Little, The Grey Friars in Oxford, 1892, p. 144. Printed at Venice, 1496, etc. In four parts, beg. "Qvoniam misericordia et veritas custodiunt.........Quatlior virtutes cardinales." f. 1.
2. "Quadripartitus apologiticus Cyrilli episcopi" (the last two words glossed "Hic fuit ordinis Carmelitarum professor, primus patriarcha Jerosolimitanus " in a 15th cent. hand) : the "Speculum Sapientiae" or "Quadripartitus apologeticus," a collection of fables, almost always attributed in the MSS. and early printed editions to one Cyril, Saint and Bishop, who is here identified with St. Cyril of Jerusalem (d. 386) and elsewhere with St. Cyril of Thessalonica, Apostle of the Slays (d. 869). It is now generally recognized, however, as a 13th cent. composition: see Cat. of Romances, ii. pp. 357-367, where a German translation in Eg. 1121 is described. In four books, with a prologue beg. "Secundum Aristotilis. sentenciam in probleuimatibus suis." Colophon, "Explicit Quadripartitus apologiticus beati Cyrilli episcopi, in quo quidem speculo limpidissimo omnis sapiencia claret." f. 46.
3. "Epistola S. Bernhardhi de cura rei familiaris." Printed in Migne, Patrol. Lat., clxxxii. col. 647, among the letters of St. Bernard of Clairvaux, but almost certainly not by him; the attribution to Bernard of Chartres is also doubtful. See Hist. Litt. de la France, xii. p. 265; Hauréau, Not. et Extr. i. pp. 334-7. Beg. "Gracioso ac felici militi domino Varnoldo (sic) domino castri sancti Ambrosii." f. 123 b. In a different hand from artt. 1, 2. Vellum; ff. i. + 127. 7½ in. x 5¾ in. xv. cent. A few illuminated initials in gold and colours, with partial borders of leaves and flowers, neatly executed in Dutch (?) style (ff. 1, 11 b, 46, etc.). On f. 126, "De sancto Martyre Treuirensi [Trier]," written twice iii gold. On f. 1, "Marcellus de S. Aldegunde" (16th cent.). Phillipps MS. 684 (sale-cat. 1910, lot 226), from the library of Leander van Ess.
