LAW TRACTS and establishment lists of various dates, viz.:-
1. "A brief collection of thee principall vnder-officers and clarkes appertaying to your Majesties Eshequer comonly kept at Westmynster, with a lyke declaration, as well of their severall functions, fees, rewardes and allowan[c]es, of auncient tyme accustomed, as allso within whose gifte thee same byne, when they become voyde": a tract addressed to the King [James I. ?] on the duties of the officers, with a chapter on abuses to be reformed. f. 1.
2. "Notes taken in the Comon Pleas by Mr. [John] Gouldseborough, one of the prothonotaries of the same court, concerning amendment of writtes and recordes and arrestinge of judgementes in all manner of accions": a tract in French, other copies of which are in Hargrave MS. 45, Harley MS. 6840, f. 71, and Add. MS. 25232, f. 59. At the end is a note said to be in the hand of William Style, the law-reporter, of the dates of three readings of the tract, 14 Feb. 1638[9], - Feb. 1654[5], and 25 June, 1657. f. 14.
3. "A true collection, as well of all the Kinges Maiesties offices and fees in any of the courtes at Westminster, as of all the offices and fees of his maiesties honourable howshoulde, together with all fees pertaine[in]ge to captaines and soldiours haueinge charge of castles, bullwarkes and fortresses within the realme of England, and likewise the offices and fees of his highnes honourable howses, parkes, forrestes and chases within the said realme," including also a table of precedence of the nobility; n.d. [1605-1607]. Another copy of almost the same date, but slightly fuller, is in Add. MS. 35848, f. 4. f. 49.
4. A brief and incomplete abridgement (Accompt-Discent) from year-books of Edward I. French. On the cover (f. 77) is the name (as owner) of Andrewe Jenour. f. 78. At the end (f. 87) are a few "Queres del seignor Dyer" [? Sir James Dyer, Chief Justice of the Common Pleas 1559-1582]. Artt. 5-7 are on vellum in a hand of circ. 1400. A table of headings to articles 5, 6 is prefixed.
5. Treatise on tenures: the brief tract in French known as Tenurae or (to distinguish it from Littleton's work) the Old Tenures. Other copies, varying greatly, are in Lansdowne MS. 559, f. 62b, Harley MS. 5146, f. 3, Add. MS. 22552, f. 19. Beg. "Tenir par seruice de chiualer est tenir par homage et fealte "; ends " seroit impossibile en ley, etc." f. 90.
6. "Natura brevium," in French, temp. Rich. II., in 136 chapters. Beg. Dicitur qil ad bref de droit patent et bref de droit clos ends auera cest bref deuers lestraunge." f. 93.
7. "Incipiunt querele noue disseisine"; with a few other notes on forms of pleading and of fines, etc. f. 117. Paper and vellum; ff. iii. + 118. 9 in. x 6 in. (art. 1); 103 in. x 6¼ in. (art. 2); 101 in. x 6½ in. (art. 3); 9¼ in. x 6½ in. (art. 4); 11 in. x 8 in. (artt. 5-7). xiv. -xvii. centt. Belonged (f. iii.) iii 1693 to Thomas Grey, 2nd Earl of Stamford, whose arms are on the leather binding (rebacked). Entered by Sir T. Phillipps in his folio catalogue as purchased of Tho. Thorpe, the bookseller. Phillipps MS. 9793 (sale-cat. 1910, lot 280).
