CORRESPONDENCE of Sir Robert Southwell, Clerk to the Privy Council (1664-1679), Envoy to Portugal (1665-1669) and Prussia (1680), and Chief Secretary for Ireland (1690-1702); 2 Oct. 1659- 3 Aug. 1697. Prefixed (f. 1) is a copy of the conclusion of the well-known letter of Robert Southwell, the Jesuit, to his father Richard Southwell, 22 Oct. 1589 (cf. Add. MS. 34395, ff. 36-42, and see R. Southwell's Complete Poems, ed. A. B. Grosart, 1872, pp. lxviii., lxxii.). Appended (ff. 401-404) are passports of - Southwell on his way through Germany to Italy in 1759. The correspondence as a whole is not of great public interest, many of the correspondents being members of Southwell's own family and men of business. Interspersed throughout are drafts and copies of Sir R. Southwell's own letters. Included are:-(a) Two long letters from Sir R. Southwell to Thomas Henshaw, French Secretary to the King dated 22 Nov. 1682, 9 Jan. 1683, defending his conduct in the matter of the Popish plot, against an attack by Antoine Arnauld in his Apologie pour les catholiques. ff.278-285;-
(b) Letter from the same to Daniel Finch, 2nd Earl of Nottingham, on the alleged suicide of Sir Edmund Bury Godfrey; 21 May 1688. f. 316. The names of the writers are given in the Index. Paper; ff. i. + 406. Folio. Phillipps MS. 8587 (sale-cat. 1910, lot 843).
