REGISTER of the Contrada or quarter of S. Romano at Ferrara; 1317-1525. The contents are mainly contemporary notarial instruments in Latin, recording leases (usus, investiturae) of lands and houses held of the syndics of the quarter. Lists of the tenants, 1352, 1375, 1390, 1589, occur at ff. 62, 1, 39, 137 respectively, those of 1352 and 1390 being records of formal entry by the syndic into all the propertie. A few documents relate to acquisition of lands by the syndics and other matters. Among them are:-(a) Record of sentence by the podestà on Dionisius de Grilis and three others for sedition, 1385. Incomplete. f. 38; -(b) Will of Bernardus Messetus, son of Dominicus de Paneliis, of Parma, under which the syndic was a commissary, 29 Mar. 1428. f. 110b;-(c) Suit between the Contrada and the twelve Savi (Sapientes of Ferrara about maintenance of a sewer., 1442 and 1462. ff. 112 b, 118 b;-(d) Grant by Leonellus, Marquis of Este, of land to build stables, 28 Jan. 1444. f. 112 b;-(e) Proceedings of the Savi on a petition from the Contrada against the enrolment for taxation in the quarter of pesons not resident there, 20 Aug. 1493. The petition and another of 30 Apr. 1494 are in Italian. f. 139;-(f) Notarial copy, dated 17 May, 1617, of a lease of 29 July, 1529. f. 145. Vellum; ff. i. + 146. 18 in. x 12 in. xiv.-xvi. centt. Binding (15th cent.?) of wooden boards covered with leather. Brass studs and corner-pieces embossed with the word "amore," and clasps. Bought by Sir T. Phillipps at Sotheby's, 20 June, 1860 (sale-cat. lot 151); Phillipps MS. 15726, repeated as 16079 (sale-cat. 1910, lot 318).
