CENSUS of Rome, perhaps (as an 18th cent. note on f. 1 b states) under Leo X. (d. Doe. 1521), but in any case between 1517 and 1527. Divided into the thirteen regioni. The names are given of all the householders, 9285 in number, and the number of "bocche" in each house (total 55,035). The Pope's household (f. 135) is given as 700 persons, and those of several of the cardinals as 150 or more. The identification of individuals in other cases is difficult, since the compiler usually adds to the Christian name the surname only, as Bacio Fiorentino, Dominico di Andrea, or the occupation only, as Marcus Antonius Miniator, Rosco Pitore, Andrea Sartore, Domenico Stampatore, Aurelio Pintor, Raynier Musicha, etc., rarely both surname and occupation, as Jacobo Junta Florentino libraro (f. 149), Francisco Caluo estampator (f. 157), Dominico da Viterbio pintor (f. 168 b). Jews and courtesans are usually noted as such. Of several persons entered as Michaele Angelo probably none is identical with the artist, whose residence in 1517- 1518 seems to have been near the Piazza SS. Apostoli, consequently in the quarter of Trevi (see Symonds, Life, 1893, i. p. 322). The name of the scribe, "Jacobo Hellin lo quale a scripto el presente libro," occurs at f. 150 b. On flyleaves are:-(a) Notes of the birth of twenty persons (all female except two), apparently at Gallese (near Orte), 1534-1544. ff. i., ii.;-(b) Notes, in different hands, of births in the Caroselli family, 1547-1551. f. 1;-(c) Account of an affray at Gallese between Turks from Algiers, driven ashore after an engagement with Venetian galleys near Ancona, and papal cavalry under Vincenzo Caroselli, who was wounded, June, 1562. f. 2;-
(d) "Memorie notabile" of events concerning Rome or Gallese, 1512-1560. ff. 199 b, 200. Paper; ff. ii. + 288. 8¼ in. X 5¾ in. Circ. 1517-1527. Contemporary Italian leather binding with foliated blind-tooling and stamped arms, on a fess between three roses an estoile of six points. An old sale-number 26. Bought by Sir T. Phillipps at Sotheby's, 21 June, 1860 (sale-cat. lot 250); Phillipps MS. 17711 (sale-cat. 1910, lot 698).
