" ROTULUS necessariorum dni. Regis E. anno regni sui sexto": roll of ',necessary " expenses of Edward I., 20 Nov. 1277- 19 Nov. 1278, " tempore magistri Thome Bely tunc custodis garderobe Regis " (see endorsement). Latin. The payments, which are very miscellaneous, amount to £1289 5s. ll d. They are arranged under the places at which they were made, beginning at Chester and following the king's movements from the Welsh border to London, thence into Kent and back, and again through Gloucestershire and Wiltshire to Glastonbury, back to London through Winchester, thence to Windsor and as far west as Rhuddlan and again back to London. On the reverse are three separate entries, amounting to £3224 2s. 2d. and including £1040 expended in the building of the castles of Llanbedr, Flint and Rhuddlan. Vellum roll, seven membranes, 10 ft. 7 in. x 11 in. Phillips MS. 13644 (sale-cat. 1903, lot 409).
