LETTERS from Thomas Burnet, son and biographer of Bishop Gilbert Burnet, to George Duckett, of Hartham, co. Wilts, M.P., on political and literary, as well as private, matters; 8 Apr. 1712-25 Jan. 1722 (N. s.) Most of them are written from London, and some under the pseudonym of Tho. Fletcher; the last three, 12 Oct. 1720, 1 Mar. 1721, 25 Jan. 1722, are from Lisbon, where the writer, who generally spells his name Burnett, was for some years consul. He was made Justice of the Common Pleas in 1741 and knighted in 1745. Both he and Duckett, who was his intimate friend, were active pamphleteers on the Whig side, and the correspondence is full of information as to their joint and several publications. It also includes notices of Steele, Addison and Pope (see Index), among others, together with accounts of the Mohocks (fF. 8 b, 10 b, "The town ... will have it that I am one of this gang"), the Hamilton and Mohun duel in 1712 (f. 18 b), and the death of Bishop Burnet (f. 80). In addition to numerous pieces of verse, mostly by Burnet, a few other letters addressed to Duckett, etc., are included, viz.: (a) Ralph Battell to [Lionel] Duckett; Venice, 24 Feb. l677. f. 1 ;-(b) "A pleasant funeral oration at the interment of the three (lately deceased) Tower-lyons."
