ABERDEEN PAPERS. Vol. LXXXVII (ff. 345). Papers relating to the Slave Trade with Brazil, 1825-1846, compiled officially for use in connection with the negotiations consequent upon the termination in 1845 Of the Anglo-Brazilian Convention of 1826 for the suppression of the Trade. Included are:-
(1) Copies and abstracts of the opinions of the King's (or Queen's) Advocate on contested questions relating to captured Brazilian slave vessels; 1827-1844. ff. 3-89b.
(2) Extracts from printed Parliamentary Papers, consisting chiefly of diplomatic correspondence containing the decisions of the British Goverment upon contested questions relating to captured Brazilian slavers; 1825-1839. ff. 90-132b.
(3)Papers relating to the Brazilian Slave Trade Act of 1845,including:-
(a) Copies of official correspondence of Hamilton Charles James Hamilton, as Envoy to Brazil, relating to the termination of the existing arrange - ments for the suppression of the trade (March 1845) together (ff. 135- 148b) with a copy of the opinion of the Law Officers thereon. ff. 149- 162b;-9(b) Printed copy of the Anglo-Brazilian Convention of 1826 (ff. 163- 172 b), together with copies (partly printed) of official correspondence relating thereto, 1828-1831, including (fr. 173-178 b) a copy of the instructions issued to the Commissioners appointed under its terms;-
(c) Printed copies of official correspondence of Lord Aberdeen with Hamilton Charles James Hamilton, Envoy to Brazil, concerning the Slave Trade, with papers relating thereto, 1842-1844, followed by a printed copy (ff. 224-225) of the Slave Trade Act of 1827. ff. 210-225;-
(d) Printed Cabinet Memorandum on the Brazilian Slave Trade Bill; 3 July 1845- ff. 234-238b;-(e) Printed Parliamentary Papers relating to the Slave Trade Act of 1845 (ff. 239-247 b), followed (ff. 248-249 b) by a copy of the Act as finally passed.
(4) Papers (chiefly copies of Admiralty reports dated 1845) showing the recent co-operation of the Spanish and Portuguese authorities in the suppression of the Trade; compiled 2 Jan. 1846. ff. 259-318b.
(5) Autograph memorandum by Stephen Lushington, the Admiralty Judge, on the Anglo-French Convention of 1845 relating to the Slave Trade. ff. 319-339.
(6) Return showing numbers of British warships employed in the suppression of the Slave Trade, 1837-1844; 16 Apr. 1845. ff. 344- 345 b.
