P. Miscellaneous fragments of medieval MSS., in Latin, for the most part taken from bindings and all cropped or mutilated except art. 7, viz:-
(1) Two bifolia from a MS of Prudentius, Contra Symmachum, containing (a) books i. 6i8-ii. 54 (Preface), ii. 121-188; (b) book ii. 322-393, 791-857. Double columns of 26 lines with the initial capitals to each verse in red. Textual affinities are with family Bb, MS. U in J. Berman's edition, Corpus Scriptorum Ecclesiasticorum Latinorum, lxi, 1926, cf. the readings 'polo', 'fluxit', 'an ulla', in ii. 125, 324, 377 respectively. XI cent. ff. 97-Ioob;-
(2) Leaf from a Missal, with musical notation, containing the opening part of the office for the 22nd Sunday after Pentecost and the two preceding ferial gospels, the first incomplete. Double columns Of 30 lines. XII cent. f. 101;-
(3) Two leaves from a philosophical treatise, containing a discussion of 'genera' and 'species', in which Aristotle and Albertus Magnus are cited. Double columns of 36 lines. XIII cent. ff. 102-103b;-(4) Two consecutive leaves from a manual of private prayers, containing devotions suitable for Easter Saturday, beg. with the hymn 'Inventor rutili'. xv cent. Crudely illuminated initial and border, German school. ff. 104-105b;-(5) Lower part of a leaf from a monastic lectionary, containing parts of lessons ix-xii for an unspecified Sunday. The lessons are taken. from St Gregory's Homily xl on the Gospels, nos. x-xii beginning respectively 'Homo quidam', 'Quid est' and 'Non nunquam'. Double columns and red, or red and blue, initials. Catchword 'per linguam'. xv cent. f. 106;-(6) Vellum leaf, containing a list of eight historical works, probably printed books, since most of them
appeared in print, with titles resembling those here given, between 1512 and 1515. French (?) book-hand. Early XVI cent. f. 107;-(7) Opening gathering (four leaves, paper) from a volume of the works of Jean Charlier de Gerson, containing a list of contents (f. 108) and the tract 'De modo vivendi onmium fidelium' (ff. 109-111). ff. 108b, 111b are blank. Belonged to the Benedictine Abbey of Clus, dioc. Hildesheim, cf. the 'ex libris' inscription 'liber sancti Georgii in clusa', f. 108. xv cent. ff. 108-111. Vellum and (art. 7) paper. Presented, with Add. MSS. 42853-42855, Add. Ch. 70697-70727, by members of the Blackburn family through Maj. J. H. Blackburn, M.C.
