(1) Hymns and other verse, chiefly religious, by or attributed to Ann Tindall; 1774-aft. 1801, n.d. Ann Tindall's hand altered greatly between 1773 and 1776, and, so far as can be seen, the present hymns and other pieces, despite their superficial dissimilarity, are autograph. ff. 1-184b. Included are:-(a) Hymns, numbered 1, 3-9, 11-37, 40-70, 73-80, 82-86, 88-99, 105-107; 1774-1776. Hymn no. 1 (f. 5) opens with the twelve lines (slightly altered) of a hymn by William Hunter, beg. 'Far above yon glorious ceiling', printed with music in The Gospel Magazine, or Treasury of Divine Knowledge, i, Jan. 1774, facing P. 32. Hymn no. 95 (ff. 128, 129) is printed, omitting stanzas 3 and 9, and with other slight alterations, in The Arminian Magazine, iii, 1780, pp. 285-287. For a typewritten transcript of Hymn no. 39 (retained by the donor) see Add. MS. 43696, ff. 6-7. ff. 1-142;-(b) 'Lines to Miss Ritchie'; 8 June 1777. Printed, with the omission of stanzas 7, 9 and 12 and with a few other alterations, in The Arminian Magazine, iii, 1780, pp. 284-285. ff. 150-151;-(c) 'Ode to Health', in 30 stanzas; 26 Sept. 1777. Stanzas 4, 5, 7-9, 28-30 are printed, in that order, and with slight alterations here attributed to John Wesley, in The Arminian Magazine, iii, 1780, pp. 613-614. ff. 159-162b;-(d) Poem, 'Epistle to Mrs M-'; n.d.
