CHRONIQUES DE FRANCE or Chroniques de St. Denis: to the death of Philip Augustus only, corresponding to vols. i-iv, p. 205, of Paulin Paris' ed., Les Grandes Chroniques de France, 1836-1838. Without title. This is the earliest in date of the copies of the Chroniques in the Museum collection. On the last page (f. 308) are inserted two poems (printed by P. Paris, iv, pp. 207, 208, from the Ste. Geneviève MS.), one in Fr., on the lessons to be learnt from the book, beg. "Rois Phelippes de France, qui tant ies renommez, Je te rent le rommans qui des rois est remez; Tant a cil trauillie qui Primas est nommez Que il est, dieu merci, parfaiz et consonmez." the other, in Lat., on the duties of kingship, beg. "Ut bene regna regas per que bene regna reguntur Hoe documenta legas que libri fine sequuntur." At the foot a l5th cent. hand has added a note on the death of Charles [VII], 22 July, [14]61, and the coronation of his successor [Louis Xl]. Vellum; ff. iv + 308. 10 3/8 in. x 7 in. Late xiii cent. Gatherings of 12 leaves (last8 ). Double columns of 46 lines, well written with flourished initials in blue and red. See. fol. "alemaingne." A few leaves in the earlier part are damaged and have been repaired. Modern French tooled green morocco binding. On f. I is the name of a former owner (18th cent.), N. Tauxier. Later the volume belonged to [Louis Jean Nicolas] Monmerqué (d. 1860), who has added some notes (dated 1855) at the beginning concerning the binding, etc. It was offered for sale by him through Potier (1851, no. 2843), but was bought in, after which he had it repaired and bound by Boutigny (receipt, f. ii). Bought by Sir Thomas Phillipps, Bart., in 1862 at the sale of the "reserved" portion of the Libri collection (sale-cat., lot 140). Phillipps MS. 16381 (sale-cat. 1911, lot 220).
