PRECEDENTS for writs and royal letters, administrative as well as judicial, together with copies of accompts and other documents relating to the Hanaper Office, in Latin and English; tempp. Hen. VIII-Eliz. Originally begun, apparently circ. 1540, as a Registrum Brevium (ff. 2, 14, 43 b, etc.); but afterwards continued in various hands, partly as a general collection of forms and precedents, and partly as a sort of miscellaneous entry-book of documents relating to the Hanaper Office. Some of these additions (ff. 21 b, 32, 40, 40 b) are certified by John Hales, Clerk of the Hanaper (whose accomptroll for 1566-7 is now Add. MS. 28039), and many more (ff. 10 b, 11 b, 24 b, etc.) by his deputy Thomas Cotton, to whom the volume belonged (see below). The earlier writs are mostly undated, and often have initials only for names ; but many of the later documents (tempp. Edw. VI-Eliz.) are given in full. Among the contents are : 1. "Dies retornabiles": list of days in each term for returning writs.
2. Certificates of assessment of Thomas Cotton for a subsidy, (a) at South Wokingdon [Ockendon], co. Essex, [Novem]ber, [14] Eliz. [1572]; (b) in the parish of Little St. Bartholomew, West Smithfield, London, 4 Nov. 13 Eliz. [1571]. ff. 1 b, 41.
