EXTRACTS and précis of the correspondence, in the years 1674 and 1675, of Edward Coleman, secretary to the Duchess of York, executed in connexion with the "Popish Plot" in 1678. The collection, which consists of 16 letters from Coleman to - Albani, the Papal nuncio at Brussels, 15 letters from Albani to Coleman, and one each from Coleman to [Jean] Ferrier, confessor of Louis XIV, and Sir William Throckmorton, is preceded by a report [by Sir Robert Southwell, clerk to the Privy Council]. Draft, partly by a secretary and partly in Southwell's hand, but with autogr. corrections by Southwell throughout. The subjects dealt with are mainly the proposal for the Pope or Louis XIV to advance money to Charles II in order to enable him to dissolve Parliament, and the position of the Duke of York. Charles is referred to as "Anthony," and the Duke as "Clement." Paper; fr. i + 32 (f. 26 blank). Folio. A.D. 1678. From the Southwell Papers (cf. Add. MSS. 35099-35101, etc., and 38144-38157 below).
