PAPERS relating to negotiations between James II and Pope Alexander VIII, 1689-1690 (several are not dated but certainly belong to these years); copies in Lat., Ital. and Fr. with Engl. translations. They consist of letters from the Pope to the King (2), from the King to the Pope (1), from Pietro Ottoboni, the Pope's nephew, to the King (1) and five memorials from [John Drummond, 1st] Earl of Melfort, to the Pope, written while ambassador of James II at Rome (10 Dec. 1689-4 Sept. 1691). They are none of them included in J. Macpherson's Original Papers (London, 1775, 2 vols.) or in the documents published in the Marquise Campana de Cavelli's Les Derniers Stuarts à Saint-Germain en Laye (Paris, 1871, 2 vols.), but the memorials from Melfort occur in Melfort's letter-book, Add. MS. 37660, ff. 15, 46, 67, 71, 133. Both James and Melfort lay stress on the fact that the Revolution was due to the King's services to Catholicism, and James says (ff. 2 b, 3 b) "Unica turbarum contra nos excitatarum origo est, quod Catholicam fidem complexi simus, et eandem in tria regna, et late sparsas per Americam subditorum nostrorum colonias reducere statuissemus." Paper; ff. i + 31. Quarto. XVII cent. From the Southwell Papers. Bought by Sir Thomas Phillipps from Thomas Thorpe (catalogues, 1834, pt. iv, no. 447, 1836, no. 709). Phillipps MS. 8651 (sale-cat. 1911, lot 598).
