DESCRIPTIVE CATALOGUE of the "Arundel Cabinett" of gems, viz. 133 intaglios and 130 cameos, preceded by a short history of the origin of the collection, etc., dated "St. James's Square, May, 1731." The gems were collected in 1630-1640 by Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel, from whom they descended to Mary, wife of Henry, 7th Duke of Norfolk, who bequeathed them to her second husband, Sir John Germain. His second wife and widow Lady Betty Germain gave them to Lady Mary Beauclerk on her marriage in 1762 to Lord Charles Spencer, and they were sold. as part of the Marlborough collection, in 1875, to David Bromilow, after whose death they were dispersed (sale-cat., Christie's, June, 1899). The present catalogue was privately printed for Sir Thomas Phillipps, but the British Museum copy is imperfect. Some of the gems are described in Gemmarum antiquarum delectus . . . quae in dactyliothecis Ducis Marlburiensis conservantur, 2 vols, 1781-1790. Paper; ff. ii + 28.12 in. x 71/4 in. XVIII cent. Phillipps MS. 15874 (sale-cat. 1911, lot 46).
