LATIN DICTIONARY: an epitome of the Liber Glossarum, an 8th century (?) compilation attributed to an otherwise unknown bishop Ansileubus. Beg. "A[bba] significat in latino pater"; ends "Pati ferre . perpeti . sustinere . tolerare . durare." Most of the entries are taken from the Etymologiae and De Natura Rerum of Isidore, the Glossae of Placidus Grammaticus, Synonyma attributed to Cicero, and glosses and commentaries on Virgil. Galen has been used for medical terms and some names of herbs. Other sources are Augustine (De Civitate Dei, Enarrationes in Psalmos, etc.), Ambrose, Bishop of Milan (Hexaemeron, etc.), Gregory the Great (Moralia, Homilies on Ezekiel), Jerome (Commentaries-on Matthew, etc.), Eucherius (Instructiones), and Orosius (Historiae). Sources are usually referred to in the margin, except at the beginning, where they are given in the text. In the lower margins (e.g. f. 38 b), and in a blank column at the end, one or two medical prescriptions have been written. A full account of the MSS. and sources of the Liber Glossarum and kindred books is given by G. Goetz in Abhandlungen der königlich-sächsischen Gesellschaft der Wissenschaften, Band xxx (1893), p. 211, where reference is made to the present MS. (Phillipps MS. 4049) on p. 253. See also S. Berger, De Glossariis et Compendiis exegeticis quibusdam Medii Aevi (1879); G. Loewe, Prodromus Corporis Glossariorum Lamdinorum (1876), p. 222; and "Der Liber Glossarum" by H. Usener in the Rheinisches Museum, vol. xxiv (1869), p. 382. Harley MS. 2735 is claimed by Goetz, following Loewe, as an abridged Liber Glossarum. Vellum; ff. iii + 160. 93/8 in. x 57/8 in. Written in Italy in various hands. XIII cent. The writing, is arranged in double columns, except ff. 17-19 b and f. 22 b, where it is continuous. The initial letter in each section-the first A, the first B, etc. is (particularly the first A) enlarged, and in red, with slight ornamentation. The same colour has been used at the beginning of the volume for marking out the different entries, and the writers to whom reference is made; greater convenience has been secured at a later date by rewriting several of the words in the margin. Gatherings of 8 leaves, with catchwords, and, for the most part, numbered. Phillipps MS. 4049; entered in the folio catalogue as purchased from T. Thorpe, bookseller (Phillipps sale-cat. 191 1, lot 306).
