Letters to the Ist Earl of Liverpool (fr. 1-12), and to the 2nd Earl of Liverpool (ff. 9, 14-264), from George Canning, Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs (1796-1799), Foreign Secretary (1807-1809), M.P. for Liverpool (1812-1822), Ambassador Extraordinary to Portugal (1814-1815), President of the India Board (1816-1821), Foreign Secretary (1822- 1827), Prime Minister (1827) ; 1797-1826. Included also are letters to Castlereagh (f. 84) and C. W. Williams-Wynn (f. 213), and a draft of a letter to George IV (f. 139). Canning was invited by Lord Liverpool to enter the ministry formed after Perceval's assassination in 1812 (see ff. 15, 19). Letters of 1820 and 1821 (ff. 111-143) show his attitude towards the ministerial proceedings a(.,ainst Queen Caroline. Soine of the letters are printed in George Canning and his Times, by A. G.
