TOWNSHEND PAPERS. Vol. VIII (ff. 357). Drafts and copies of the same correspondence, extending also over the negotiations concerning Sweden, Poland and Schleswig, down to the recall of Lord Townshend; 24 May, 1709-circ. 17 Mar. 1711, N.S. Some of the letters are addressed to Charles Spencer, 3rd Earl of Sunderland; and a few original letters from other correspondents are included. Some of the drafts and annotations are in Lord Townshend's own hand, but a large number are, as in Add. MS. 38498 above, in the hand of Horatio Walpole, his secretary. For the period which it covers, the register in the preceding volume is fuller, but the present volume not only extends over the whole embassy, but contains also copies of Henry Boyle's letters and some drafts from Lord Townshend to the Duke of Marlborough. Full copies of the correspondence, 19 May, 1709 23 Sept. 1710, N.S., are in Egerton MSS. 892-894, and large extracts and copies in Add. MS. 36795; copies, 1-29Aug. 1710, N.S., are in Add. MS.33273, ff.44-76. Prefixed (f. 1) is a letter in Latin from Carolus Conradus Achenbac to R. Hales, dated Berlin, 27 Apr. 1709, N.S., on the steps to be taken in the proposed treaty to safeguard the Protestant churches in Germany. Paper. Folio. (Townshend sale-cat. 1911, lots 232, 343, 329).
