LECTIONARY, of German origin, containing the lessons (three or nine) for Matins. The contents are as follows: (1) Temporale, beginning, imperfectly with three lessons for a Saturday. f. 1; (2) Sanctorale, from the Vigil of S. John Baptist to the Passion of S. Andrew (including lessons for S. Augustine of Hippo, f. 75, and for his first translation [11 Oct.], f. 94 b.) f. 51; (3) Commune Sanctorum. f. 115 ; (4) Nine lessons for the Virgin, to be read "quando hystoria: O spes divina." f. 139 b. The original portion of the MS. ends on f. 143, col. i, which should follow f. 141 b. F. 142 contains three more lessons in a 13th cent. hand, and at f. 143 begin other additions to the Sanctorale in hands of the same date, viz. S. Dominic (6 lessons). f. 143; S. Elizabeth (6, for Sun. within the octave). f. 144 ; S. Catharine, in another hand (6). f. 145 b; All Saints (6, for Sun. within the octave). f. 147b; Octave of All Saints (6). f. 148 b; All Saints ("lectio nona in die" ). f. 149 ; De Corpore Domini, another change of hand (9). f. 149 b; S. Elizabeth, another set (6). f. 151 ; S. Elizabeth, a third set, in another hand (9). f. 152 b. Finally, in a hand of the l5th cent., follow inserted leaves containing lessons for the Visitation (Vigil, Day, and ? Octave). f. 155. Vellum; ff. i + 156. 14 1/2 in. x 91/4 in. XII-XIII, and XV centt. Decorative capitals on ff. 51, 51 b, 80 b; initials chiefly in red and green. Margins of many leaves cut down to the text; leaves wanting at beginning and after ff. 4, 23, 28, 66, 74, 91, 155. F. 1 mutilated; only fragments remain of ff. 21, 22, 27. Modern binding of red Russia (faded). Phillipps MSS. 404 and 20742 (sale-cat. 1913, lot 877), from the library of Leander van Ess, S.T.D., of Marburg and Darmstadt.
