COMPUTUS MAIOR: the astronomical treatise of Campanus of Novara. Printed in the Junta volume of treatises called Sphera (1518), art. 10, pp. 159-177. Another copy is at Oxford, Digby MS. 215, f. 68 b. Preface, which is followed by a table of contents, beg. "Rogauit me unus ex hiis, quibus contradicere nequeo, ut scientiam, quam compotum appellamus, breuiter et clare"; text, "Compotus est sciencia numeracionis et diuisionis temporum secundum uulgares obseruancias." There are numerous diagrams and astronomical tables illustrating the text. Marginal notes of some interest are added in contemporary and later hands. The date 1320 occurs in a note on f. 10, and the date 1345-6 in a note by a "minimus Sorbonista" on the margin of f. 14. The treatise is followed by a calendar (ff. 42-46 b), which is not found in the printed text. The leonine hexameters on the dies Egyptiaci which accompany each month beg "Prima dies Iani timor est et septima vani." The saints are for thediocese of Évreux. Vellum; ff. i + 48. Small quarto. Early XIV cent. Gatherings of 12 leaves, with catchwords. Sec. fol. "nunc quam prius." Belonged in the l8th century to the Carmelites of Dijon (ff. 1, 2). Phillipps MS. 25138 (sale-cat. 1913, lot 521).
