MEDICAL and theological works, viz.: 1. "Liber uite humane magistri Bernardi de Gordonio": the fourth and last "particula," called sometimes "De regimine sanitatis" and sometimes "De conservatione vitae humanae," of the longer work in four parts "De conservatione vitae humanae" begun 22 Feb. and finished 9 Nov. 1307. The whole work is found in Add. MS. 26841, ff. 1-71 b (where between partt. 1 and 2 is interpolated the tract "De crisi" ), and in Sloane MSS. 217, ff. 8-105 ; 2481, ff. 2-86 b. In Sloane MSS. 334, ff. 218-290; 512, ff. 270-374 b, particulae 1, 2, and 4 are found as separate treatises : in 512 the third particula "De pulsibus" has been added by a later hand. The whole printed in Bernardi Gordonii Opus Lilium Medicinae Inscriptum, Lugduni, 1574, pp. 667-947. The fourth particula also occurs alone in Sloane MS. 3097, ff. 1-61, where it is followed, as here, by the Tacuinum. The resemblance between the two MSS. is so close that the present one may be copied or derived from Sloane 3097 (dated 1311) ; or, more probably, both are derived from a common original. This particula is printed alone as Bernhardi de Gordonio. . . . De Conservatione Vitae Humanae, Lipsiae, 1570, where however the "quaestiones" are all collected separately at the end of the volume. For the mutual relation of the four partieulae and a description of the other Museum MSS. see H. I. Bell, The Bibliography of Bernard de Gordon's 'De Cons. Vitae Humanae,' in Proc. of xviith Intern. Congr. of Medicine, section xxiii, pp. 325-337. Preface beg. "Secundum intencionem Aristotilis primo etycorum" ; ends "ante tribunal iudicis ueniamus." Treatise beg. (f. 3 b) "Mulier cum approximatur ad Partum" ; ends "Bene autem mori uia est in uitam eternam, ad quam nos perducat Christus filius Dei uiui. Amen dicant omnia." f. 1.
2. "Tacuinum sanitatis in medicina," by "Elbulkassem Elmuthar filius Hababdim filii Buccilla medici de Baldach" ; the Takwim alsihhah of Mukhtãr ibn al-Hasan, called Ibn Butlãn. Printed as Tacuini Sanitatis Elluchasem Elimithar. Medici de Baldath, Argentorati, 1531; a German version was subsequently published under the title Schachtafelen der Gesuntheyt, Strassburg, 1533. As in art. 1, the present MS. agrees closely with Sloane 3097, but the scribe has reversed the last two tables (nos. 267-273 and 274-280), having accidentally copied the second first, apparently with the nos. 267-273, which, on discovering his mistake, he corrected to 274-280, and copied nos. 267-273 on the followinog two pages. Another MS. is Add. 18701, ff. 50-94. Preface beg. "Tacuinum sanitatis de sex rebus. . . . Prima est preparatio aeris," ; ends "in ultimo huius libri cum auxilio altissimi." Tables beg. "Canones quibus noscuntur nature ciborum" ; end "sicut pertinet maiestati sue" ; after which follows the index ; after "sue" a 16th cent. hand has added some further sentences of a religious character, beginning "quia omnis sapiencia a domino deo est." f. 56.
3. Vincent of Beauvais, "Epystola de morte amici consolatoria," addressed to Louis IX of France. Printed with other minor works of the author by J. de Amerbach, Basel, 1481 (no title-page). Preface beg. "Illustrissimo domino in Christo sibi karissimo" (in the printed text and in Harley MS. 2423, f. 1, this is preceded by "Dilecto deo et hominibus" ); ends "ut sufferatis solacii uerbum." Treatise beg. "In primis igitur aduertere debet illa" ; ends "Bene ac diu ualeat in nobis modestia regie maiestatis. Amen." f. 105. Vellum; ff. ii + 139. 111/2 in. x 8 in. XIV cent. Gatherings of 8 leaves (viii10, xiii6 last 3 ). A few illuminated initials, others flourished in blue and red or red and black. Bound in green morocco with gilt-stamped border. Belonged, like Burney MSS. 300, 301, and Add. MS. 12029, to the Celestines [Priory of St. Antoinel of Amiens, as is shown by the l5th cent. inscription at the end (f. 139) : " Iste liber est de monasterio fratrum Celestinorum de Ambianis, donatus quondam per venerabiles viros domini nostri Regis consiliarios magistros Huguonem et Johannem de Allyaco [for Hugues d'Ailly, canon of the Cathedral of Amiens, see L. F. Daire, Hist. de la Ville d'Amiens (1757), ii, p. 289], vna cum plurimis aliis bonis que prelibato monasterio ob salutem et remedium animarum suarum misericorditer erogauerunt." Afterwards belonged to the bookseller Chardin of Paris, in the catalogue of whose library it was numbered 882 (Phillipps folio-catalogue, p. 9). Phillipps MS. 818 (sale-cat. 1913, lot 775).
