GENEALOGICAL and historical collection of Nicholas Wotton [1497-1567], the diplomatist, Dean of Canterbury and York, relating to noble or distinguished English and French families, with index in three series. Mostly autograph. A companion volume is Harley MS. 902. The sources, both oral and written, are generally stated. Of the latter, specific genealogies are occasionally mentioned, as of Mowbray, Perey, Belknap, Chabot, Boulogne, Luxemburg; more often merely the names of the owners of the books, notes, etc., lent to the author, are given. Chief of these are Fulk ap Howell, Lancaster Herald (d. 1551), the York Herald and Norroy King of Arms, and members of his own and allied families, Finch, Medley, Shelley, Grey. For the French pedigrees the books of Johannes Ferronius [Jean le Féron, advocate at Paris and author of works on heraldry] are often quoted, to which Wotton had access probably when ambassador at Paris (1546-1549). The chief literary sources are Henry of Huntingdon and the Polychronicon of Ranulf Higden. Apart from the genealogies the mos important items are : (1) Four different versions of the so-called Battle Abbey Roll of the Conqueror's companions, being the 6th, 3rd, 2nd and 7th of the list in The Battle Abbey Roll by the Duchess of Cleveland, vol. i, p. viii. ff. 86, 87 b and 167 b, 133, 135 ; (2) Rolls of arms in blason: the so-called Parliamentary, First Dunstable, and Carlaverock rolls with the additional memorandum as in Greenstreet and Russell, Reference List of Rolls of Arms, p. 8, note 2. ff. 147-167; (3) Names of those who took part in the tournaments on the entrance of Henry II into Paris, 1549. f. 73 ; (4) Metrical history of Stone Priory and the connexion of the Staffords therewith (printed in Duodale's Monasticon, vi, pt. i, p. 230). Another copy is in Add. MS. 36542, f. 138. f. 80 ; (5) Metrical epitaph of Millicent Fastolf, wife of Sir John Fastolf of Caistor, co. Norf., by William Worcester, al. Botener, clerk to Sir John. f. 139; (6) Returns of commanders, loyal adherents, men-at-arms, revenue and expenditure of the Regent John, Duke of Bedford, in France, 1422-1434. ff. 201-207. Paper; ff. i + 261. Folio. XVI cent. (after 1551). Belonged to Sir George Nayler, Garter King of Arms (d. 1831). Phillipps MS. 9020 (sale-cat. 1913, lot 1130).
