MISCELLANEOUS papers and letters, collected together apparently by Thomas Tenison, Rector of St. Martin's in the Fields, Westiminster, afterwards Archbishop of Canterbury, viz.
1. Epigrammata, in an early l7th cent. hand, selected from various authors. Lat. The names James Searle, of Hart Hall, Oxford, and Robert Fry, "at Mr. Schoolemaisters house in Winchester," occur in scribbles on ff. iii and 11 b. The only James Searle recorded in Foster's Alumni Oxon. was of New College (matric. 1606/7). f. 1.
2. Letters from Desyderius Lignamineus, Dominican of Padua, to (a) Joannes Baptista Priuitellius; Venice, 22 Jan. 1547. f. 13; (b) Hieronymus Mercatellus ; Padua, 9 May, 1556. f. 16. Both on the subject of the alleged discovery of Cicero's tomb in Zante, with drawings of urns (f. 15), and verses (f. 18) by Alexander Mamianus and Lucas Campanius on the discovery of Cicero's ashes. Lat. Copies, probably from the printed text, Sepulchri Facies, etc. (n. d.).
3. "Narratio disceptationis habitae per Gulielmum Laud . . . . cum domino Fishero Jesuita . . . . etc."; a Latin translation of the preface and of a small portion of the published work (see A Relation of the Conference betweene William Lawd . . . and Mr. Fisher the Jesuite, etc., 1639, preface and pp. 1-4 ). f. 20.
4. Drafts of portions of Francis Bacon's 'Sylva Sylvarum' and other works. The greater part (ff. 29-36 b, 39-48 b, 50-52 b) is in the band of Dr. William Rawley, Bacon's chaplain; two leaves (ff. 37, 38) in a second, un-identified hand, are corrected by him; while a single leaf, f. 49, containing drafts in Latin of , 4 and 12 under the heading "Natura Durabilis" of the "Historia Vitae et Mortis" (Works, ed. Spedding, Ellis and Heath, 1857, ii, pp. 111, 112) is apparently in the autograph of Bacon himself. The drafts are in many cases merely notes of intended experiments, the results of which are given in the published works ; compare "Present Experiments with the Loadstone" (f. 29) with the "Inquisitio de Magnete" (Works, ii, p. 311). Other drafts occur almost in their finished form ; compare the experiment with a lump of "Ure" (f. 30) with Sylva Sylvarum, Exp. 33 (ib. ii, p. 353) and the experiinent with Aqua Fortis on the same page with Sylva Sylvarum, Exp. 790 (ib. ii, p. 596); the order of the drafts being other than that of the finished work. The account of the Chameleon (f. 31), cf. Sylva Sylvarum, Exp. 360 (ib. ii, p. 460-461), is imperfect at beginning through loss of a leaf ; several other leaves in this portion are wanting. ff. 29-52b.
5. Notes on metals, in a late l7th cent. hand. Lat. and Engl. ff. 53-55.
6. Treatise (imperfect at beginning) on the election of officers of the city of London, with report of the committee appointed for examination of the state of the Chamber of London; apparently in the hand of Fabian Philipps (d. 1690). f. 56.
7. Catalogue of the MSS. of Sir James Ware, including many historical MSS. not in the printed catalogue (Dublin, 1648). With a few differences it agrees substantially with the catalogue of the Earl of Clarendon's MSS. in Catalogi Manuscriptorum Angliae, Oxon. 1697. f. 74.
8. Treatise of the "Art Spagiricke," etc. : miscellaneous alchemical and theological collections, the last portion on the back of part of a deed relating to Merton, 10 June, temp. Jas. I. f. 89.
9. Letters, original and copies, mostly to Thomas Tenison, afterwards Archbishop of Canterbury ; 1671-1685. The most important writers' names are given in the Index. ff. 127-150. With the letters are: "The Articles of the Society of Young, Men of St. Martin's in the Fields and thereabouts." f. 137 The conditions of Mr. Tiffen's having the office of Clerk of St. James." f. 139; and some autograph notes by Tenison on the foundation of his public library in the parish of St. Martin in the Fields (dispersed in 1861). f. 147. Paper; ff. iii + 150. Folio. XVII cent. Lot 61 in the sale of the Tenison library, 1 July, 1861 ; purchased by Boone. Phillipps MS. 15733 (sale-cat. 1913, lot 532).
