CERTIFICATES OF PENANCE, etc., either for scandalous words or for immoral conduct, ordered by the consistory courts (a) of Westminster, 20 Mar. 1670-11 Jan. 1713. ff. l-24; (b) of Rochester, 17 July, 1768-16 Feb. 1772. ff. 25-43. The penances are to be performed at St. Margaret's, Westminster (ff. 1-18, 20-24), at Westminster Abbey (f. 19), at Bromley, co. Kent (f. 25), and at Lewisham, co. Kent (ff. 27-33, 38-43), in every case on a Sunday. As Zachary Pearce, Bishop of Rochester 1756-1774, was also Dean of Westminster 1756-1768, it is possible that he used the, old certificates from Westminster as precedents. The returns certifying performance are signed by the minister and churchwardens of the parish. In the form of penance for slander the offender is to repair to the vestry after morning or evening prayer and sermon, and to repeat after the minister, in the presence of the person slandered, that person's friends, and the churchwardens, a confession, an expression of penitence, and sometimes a formal recantation of the slander. In the form for immoral conduct the penitent (in each case a woman) is to stand at the porch in a white sheet, with a white wand in her hand, "open-faced," with a paper of accusation on her breast, asking forgiveness of such as pass by. After the first lesson she is to be placed in the body of the church near the minister's reading-desk for the remainder of the service. After the Gospel she is to repeat after the minister a confession of her offence. In three cases; (ff. 27, 34, 36) the "libel," or form of complaint upon which the order is based, accompanies it, and in one case (f. 38 b) the Bishop's order for absolution, with remains of seal. Paper ; ff 43. Folio. Phillipps MS. 19281 (sale-cat. 1913, lot 1006). The volume is said to have been one of the Cole MSS. (Phillipps folio-cat., 1837, p. 363).
