JEAN LOUIS BERLANDIER, "Vocabulaires de diverses peuplades nomades des parties septentrionales du Mexique" ; with interpretations in French and Spanish, etc. The following are the languages treated : Carancahues. ff. 4, 21. Carisso (Nuevo Leon). ff. 23-28. Comanche. f. 8. Garza. f.15. Lipan. f.29. Maya (Yucatan). ff. 16, 35. Mulato. f. 24. Tancahues. f. 18.
Some of these are mentioned in the index to Count de la Viñaza's Bibliografía Española de lenguas indígenas de América, 1892. Besides the philological papers, there are in Spanish (a) Ethnographical notes on the Lipanes, Comanches, Tancahues, Cheraquis, Savanos, Delawares and Quicapus. f. 14 ; (b) Geological notes. f. 37 b ; (c) Itineraries from Campeche to Merida, from Merida to Balladolid [Valladolid], and from Alerida to Sisal. ff. 40-42. The date of the manuscript is probably between 1826, when Berlandier became a member of the Frontier Commission of Mexico, and 1850, when the Mexican Government published his Diario de Viage de la Comision de Limites. The year 1828 is referred to, as past, on f. 23. Most of the manuscript is presumably Berlandier's autograph, but ff. 19, 20 are in that of his friend Rafael Chowell, who furnished him with much of the material for this work. Elsewhere (ff. 15, 29) Berlandier acknowledges help from the chiefs of the tribes concerned. Several pages are left blank, and it would seem that no methodical arrangement of the papers has been observed. Paper; ff. 42. Small quarto. Middle of XIX cent. Phillipps MS. 15588 (sale-cat. 1913, lot 357).
