B. Danby Papers (1677-1691), of which the principal feature is the correspondence in 1678 between the Lord Treasurer, Thomas Osborne, Earl of Danby, afterwards 1st Duke of Leeds, and Ralph Montagu, English Ambassador to France, afterwards 1st Duke of Montagu. These letters relate to the question of the French subsidy and the secret negotiations of Charles II with France, and they include two drafts by Danby (ff. 129, 139), which, though bearing the autograph approval and initials of the king, afterwards furnished the material for Danby's impeachment. With one or two exceptions, Montagu's letters are the originals, Danby's autograph drafts or copies. Most of this correspondence was printed by Danby himself in 1710, with omissions and alterations to suit his purpose, in Copies and extracts of letters to and from the Earl of Danby. At ff. 211-232 are gathered together extracts from various historians on the subject of the Danby letters. At the end of the volume are several contemporary printed publications. Most of the Danby MSS. belonged to John Webster, LL.D. (Sotheby sale-cat., May 1892, lots 166-170, 207, 331). Hodgkin sale, lot 334.
