HODGKIN PAPERS. Vol. V (ff. 211). Letters and papers of Sir Bernard Gascoigne (whose signature on f. 3b is Bernardo Guasconi) ; 1667-temp. James II. They consist for the most part of autograph drafts by Gascoigne both in Italian and English (the latter being sometimes translations of the former), and in a lesser degree of non-autograph documents, some of which are also fair copies or translations of the drafts. Most, if not all, of the papers were sold at Sotheby's, 27 June, 1891 (lot 83). Lot 304 in the Hodgkin sale, A number of them are printed at length in H.M.C., pp. 125-153. For another volume of Gascoigne correspondence see Add. MS. 34077, ff. 1-63. The principal contents are: 1. Letters written by Gascoigne from Lisbon and Madrid (with one dated at London just before his departure) in 1668, to (a) Henry Bennet, Baron, afterwards Earl of, Arlington (ff. 3-14, 21-25), and (b) Queen Catharine of Braganza (ff. 15-20, 40), on the situation in Portugal after the deposition of Alfonso VI and the subsequent marriage of his Queen with his brother and successor Don Pedro, and in Spain, where, during the minority of Charles II, the Queenmother wm opposed by Don Juan of Austria. Ital. and Engl.
2. Letter from Gascoigne to [Johan Eberhard Neidhardt, Grand Inquisitor and First Minister of Spain,] showing how the writer in Neidhardt's position would counter Don Juan's hostility; [1668]. Ital. only. f. 26.
3. Letters and papers of Gascoigne relating to the Triple Alliance of England, Holland and Sweden against France in 1668, the endeavour to get the Emperor Leopold I to join the league, and the desertion in 1670 of Charles II to France; [circ. 1670]. Ital., except ff. 63, 64 in Spanish, and f. 73 in English. Included are letters from Gascoigne to (a) [Margaret Theresa], the Empress, f. 41, and (b) Lord [Arlington], f. 65 ; also (f. 46) a dialogue by Gascoigne on the interests of the various European powers in the situation in Flanders. ff. 41-73.
4. Letters from Gascoigne to (a) , on the question of war or peace with Holland. ff. 75-80; (b) [Charles II], on the army, the navy and the French alliance. ff. 81-106; (c) [James II], on the government of the kingdom and of the army. ff. 110-152. Engl. and Ital.
5. (a) Compendium articulorum ex imperatoris Caroli V. statutis scu legibus criminalibus a Petro Pappo in Annotatioibus suis citatorum: a compendium of the criminal laws of Charles V. Lat. f. 153; (b) Maximiliam II epistola articulorum militarium in Comitiis Spirensibus A. 1570 conscripta edictoque sancita, et a Petro Pappo Annotationibus suis allegata : military articles of Maximilian II. Lat. f. 166. These are both to be found in German in Pappus, Corpus Juris Militaris (1674), pp. 64, 820.
