THEOLOGICAL NOTE-BOOK containing (1) "Index commentariorum Joan[nis] Buogen[hagii] Pomerani in Psalterium Davidicum," letters A-C, with paginal references to the 1524 edition of Bugenhagen's Commentary. f. 1; (2) Biblical antitheses, 149 couples of contrasted passages. f. 6; (3) Satirical lament on the abolition of the Mass, beg. "Oue [i.e. O vae] oue oue oue Sitis tristes oue oue," in 57 stanzas of 3 lines with the refrain "Oue oue", followed in another hand by "Epitaphium Missae" in four elegiac couplets beg. "Preteriens hospes vacuum mirere sepulchrum" preceded by the date 1527. For the connexion between the longer poem and Roy and Barlowe's Rede me and be not Wrothe, Strasburg, 1528, see J. E. Hodgkin in Notes and Queries, 4th Ser., ix, p. 213. Among the Roman Catholic controversialists named in the poem is Hieronymus Emser, who d. in 1527. On f. 19 is the note "Resipiscentiam et conversionem horum lugentium Missam, vide infra cantilenam vulgarem," i.e. art. 5. f. 13 b; (4) "Credo Sanctam Ecclesiam Catholicam," an expansion of this article of the Creed supported by Biblical authorities, beg. "Hanc credimus universalem"; with the colophon (sic) f. 20 ; (5) Satirical poem in German (see the reference in art. 3) in 11 stanzas of 9 lines, each beg. "Ich will furhin kain pfaff mer sein. f. 23. The MS. formed part of the library of Dr. George Kloss of Frankfort on the Main, sold in London at Sotheby's in 1835, and is one of those which Samuel Leigh Sotheby, who compiled the sale-catalogue, believed to have come from the library of Philip Melanchthon. In the present instance however Sotheby's opinion that the MS. is in Melanchthon's hand can hardly be maintained (see sale-cat. lot 4633, with facsimiles, and S. L. Sotheby's Observations upon the Handwriting of Philip Melanchthon, 1839, reissued as Unpubl. Documents, etc., 1840, pl. vi, nos. 1-7). None of the contents appears in the printed editions of the works of Melanchthon. Paper; ff. iv + 25. 6 in. x 4 in. Circ. A.D. 1527. At f. iii is inserted a letter from Edward Arber, F.S.A., to Hodgkin touching the volume, 1872. Book-plates of George Kloss, M.D., and J. E. Hodgkin, dated 1821, (sale-cat., lot 767).
