"CY COMMANCE la nativité nostre sire Jhesucrist" ; transcript of a 15th cent. French mystery-play in octosyllabic couplets. Beg. "In principio creavit Deus celum et terram, etc . . . Benois sort il qui se tera et fera paix pour mieulx oyr." Petit de Julleville in Histoire du Theâtre en France: Les Mystères, 1880, ii, p. 382, notices only one MS. of this play, no. 1131 (Y. f. in fol. 10) in the Library of St. Geneviève at Paris (Cat., by Kohler, 1893), from which A. Jubinal published his Mystères inédits du XVe siècle, 1837.. The text of the present MS. and of its immediate original (cf. note, f. 29) is considerably deranged owing to transpositions at ff. 5 b, 8 b, 11, 14, 19 b, 22, 27 b, 30 b ; otherwise the text closely resembles that of Jubinal, op. cit. ii,p.i (cf. also the corrections of Jubinal's collation in J. Poewe, Sprache und Verskunst der Mystères inédits du XVe siècle, 1900, p. 81). The transpositions, being of similar length and never more than one length out of place, can be easily explained by slight deplacement of folios in an ancestor of the present volume. Such readings as "et a valu" (f. 29 b) and "Anastaise" (f. 35) for Jubinal's "le mien salu" and "Honestasse" as well as the omission in Jubinal of the whole line "Enfanter doit isnellement" (f. 30 b), suggest an independent authority for this MS. Colophon, "Explicit Explicit" (Jubinal, "Explicit Explixit"). Paper; ff. vi + 40. Octavo. XVIII-XIX cent. At the beginning of the book are several tracings: f. ii from a book printed by Jean Trepperel (Paris, circ. 1538) ; f. iii from "La Vendition de Joseph," printed for Pierre Sergent (Paris, circ. 1538) ; f. iv (a) from a seal "Sigilum indulgenciarum hospitalis bte. m. de podio" [Puyen-Velay]; and (b) S. Bridget kneeling ; f. v symbols of the Passion, etc., and the legend "Meditate (sic) cordis mei." Marginal notes passim are attributed, in a note on f. vi, to Charles C. F. Hérisson, bibliographer. (Cf. Add. MS. 22791). Black leather binding (19th cent.) with initials S. H. Belonged to Guglielmo Libri (sale-cat. 1859, lot 717). Hodgkin's book-plate as in 38858 (sale-cat., lot 1083).
