"VITE di Pontefici, Cardinali, et altri Prencipi et huomini Illustri per santità, lettere, et arme, cavate da un manuscritto antichissimo. Tomo primo," beg. with Pope Eugenius IV and ending with Malraso Ceciliano. This collection of lives by the Florentine bookseller Vespasiano da Bisticci (1421-1498) was first published by A. Mai in Spicilegium Romanum, vol. i, 1829, although individual lives had previously appeared. The text and order of the present volume closely resemble those of the Bologna MS., on which is chiefly based the edition of L. Frati, Vite di Uomini Illustri del secolo xv, 1892, 1893, e.g. in the additional passages in the life of Gianozzo Manetti and the position of the preface following the life of Eugenius (cf. Archiv. Stor. Ital., ser. v, vol. iii, p. 208). Not infrequently the MS. has readings peculiar to itself, and occasionally supports other MSS. against B. lt is not included among the MSS. noticed in Frati's introduction. The index on f. 1 has some omissions. Paper; ff. 348. Folio. XVII cent. On the vellum back is the no.
104, perhaps the number of the MS. in the library of - Mattei (cf. Add. MS. 38670). Apparently belonged to Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford (sale-cat. 1835, lot 1645), and afterwards to Sir Thomas Phillipps, MS. 11861 (sale-cat. 1899, lot 217).
