"MÉMOIRE, sur la déadence de la Religion et des Mœurs, et sur ce que l'on peut proposer pour la réparer," in two parts with index, preceded by an autograph letter of presentation, apparently to some Cardinal. The writer, who was just about to leave Italy, signs "Clement," with date, "Rome, Dim. 14 avril 1771." Occasional notes and corrections have been added by the author, and on f. 121 b is the date Naples, 2 février 1771. The Jansenist sympathies and knowledge of Spanish affairs suggest as author Augustin J. C. Clément (later Constitutional Bishop of Versailles) who travelled in Spain and Italy and was in Rome about this date. Paper; ff. i + 123. Folio. Marked lxxvii on the vellum back, and inside "Cod. 202." Belonged to Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford (sale-cat. 1830, part of lot 56). Phillipps MS. 5049 (sale-cat. 1899, lot 388).
