"THE FORTUNE OF WAR, or a ten years Captivity in France, by Robert Bastard James, Lieut. in the Royal Navy" ; 1804-1814. Autograph. Preceded (f. 3) by a dedication to Vice-Admiral Sir George Cockburn, G.C.B., Lord of the Admiralty, dated 20 May, 1822. James was wrecked when in charge of a captured sloop off the Loire, and carried across France to Verdun (f. 26). He escaped in 1807 (f. 33) and reached Ulm (f. 53), where he was arrested by the Bavarian authorities, and handed over to the French at Strassburg (f. 58). He was then transferred to the fort of Bitsch (f. 77), a lithograph of which, published by L. H. Wall, Lieut. R.N., 17 May, 1817, is prefixed (f. 1) to the volume. He remained in Verdun or Bitsch for most of the period till his release by the advance of the Allies (f. 106). In 1814 he was master's mate in the Sparrow, which brought over Prince Platoff and Count Barclay de Tolly (f. 109 b), and finished his service in the Mediterranean in June, 1816 (f . 111 b). Published almost completely in Blackwood's Magazine (June, 1899), pp. 925-958, under the title of "A prisoner under Napoleon," by Prof. Edward Dowden, the late owner. Paper; ff. 111. Small octavo.
