WODEHOUSE PAPERS. Vol. XVIII. Statutes, etc., of the Royal Collegiate Chapel of St. Geoorge at Windsor. Mainly in Latin. The arrangement of the book has evidently been altered. Ff. 50, 45-49 originally preceded art. 1, as is shown by the worm-holes, as well as by a note on f. 39b. Contents: 1. "[F]undacio" : the charter of Edward III incorporating the College, 6 Aug. 1348. Printed in Dugdale's Monasticon (1830) vi, p. 1354, cf. Cal. Pat. Rolls, Edward III, viii, p. 144. A later copy is in Harley MS. 564, f. 1. f. 1.
2. "[S]tatututa" [sic, colophon] : the ordinances made under papal and royal authority by William [Edington], Bishop of Winchester, 30 Nov. 1352. Followed (f. 22b) by forms of admission, here made out in the name of John Arundell, who was Warden or Dean from 1417 to 1452, and (f. 24) by two tables of chapterheadings for the statutes. In Harley MS. 564, in which the statutes begin at f. 4, these forms are in the name of J[ohn] F[aux], Dean 1462-1470, and in Cotton MS. Vespasian F. ix (statutes beg. f. 2) in the name of A[nthony] M[aney], Dean 1612-1618. The bull of Clement VI, 30 Nov. 1350, which is recited by Edington, is printed in Monasticon, vi, p. 1355. f. 3. Between arts. 2 and 3 are inserted in later hands (a) Bull of Sixtus IV, 22 July, 1475, empowering the Bishop of Salisbury at the request of the College to make new statutes. f. 26b; (b) "Exposicio dubiorum verborum iuris Anglie" : explanation of soke, sake, etc. f. 23b.
3. "Hic incipiunt iniuncciones" : injunctions made by John [Kemp], Archbishop of York and Papal Legate, following upon a visitation of the College made by him as Chancellor, 22 May, 1430. Dated 22 Feb. 1431/2. Followed (f. 39) by a "breue regium de eisdem obseruandis," 22 Feb. 1432, and (f. 40) a table of chapter-headings for the injunctions. f. 29. At the end of the King's letter, and before the table of chapters, is a note in another hand: "Require alias litteras regias executorias super isto breui sub signeto factas et decano ac capitulo capelle predicte transmissas exequendas et in omnibus perimplendas in incepcione istius libri descriptas," referring to art. 11, now bound at the end of the volume (f. 46). This is followed in an early 16th cent. hand by the form of the oath in English taken by [Thomas Howard,] Lord Howard, [Thomas West, 8th] Lord Delawarr, and Sir Henry Marny on admission as Knights of the Garter, 28 Apr., 2 Hen. VIII [1510]. f. 39b. Arts. 4, 5 are in a different, but nearly contemporary, hand.
4. "Honesta constitucio et ordinacio congrua pro refrenandis discordiis ministrorum collegii" : ordinances by John Arundell and the Chapter for imposing fines on vicars and clerks guilty of abusive language or assault; n. d. f. 41.
5. Bull of dispensation by Clement VI, 31 Dec. 1350, allowing the Warden of the College to hold one other benefice. The preamble agrees with that of art. 6. f. 42.
6. Bull of Clement VI, 12 Feb. 1350/1 , giving the College exemption from ordinary episcopal jurisdiction. Printed in Monasticon, vi, p. 1355. f . 42b.
7. Incomplete transcript of bull of Eugenius [IV], dispensing the Warden and Canons from residence in other benefices which they may hold. The date is missing [1431-1447]. f. 43b.
8. Declaration in English by John [Kemp], Archbishop of York and Chancellor, explaining ch. 39 of the statutes, made at the time of his visitation (1430, see art. 3). Beg. "Sires as I am enformed ye are in doute." f. 44b. Arts. 9-13 originally preceded art. 1. They are in different hands, art. 11 alone being possibly in the same hand as arts. 1-3, 6 and 8.
9. "Carta per quam oblaciones capelle et lasta allecis dantur canonicis residentibus et non aliis" : inspeximus and confirmation by Henry VI of a confirmation (dated 3 Nov. 1399) by Henry IV of a charter (dated 16 Oct. 1393) of Richard II, giving to resident Canons only the right to share in the offerings in the Chapel of Windsor and the gift of herrings from Great Yarmouth (see art. 10). Dated 14 Feb. 1439. Attested by John Brokholes and Richard Sturgeon, clerks. f. 45.
10. "Carta de communitate ville Magne Iernemuth pro allece" : grant by the Bailiffs and Commonalty of Great Yarmouth, co. Norf., to the Warden and College of a last of dry and wellcleaned red herrings every St. Andrew's Day [30 Nov.] Dated 1 Apr. 26 Edw. III [1332]. f. 45b. At the foot of this is ail omitted passage belonging to art. 12, "inferius addatur folio 4o ad hoc signum," i.e. on f. 49.
11. "By the King" : letter of Henry VI to the Warden, or Dean, and Canons, in English, under the signet, to observe the statutes and injunctions. Dated 24 July, s.a. [1432 ?]. f. 46.
12. "Ordinacio facta per Decanum et assensum Collegii . . . vt omnes et singuli vicarii eiusdem Collegii taliter eos gubernent infra aulam eis assignatam ut inferius patet": regulations for the commons, battels, behaviour and duties, etc., of the Vicars; n.d. f. 46b.
13. "Ordinaciones et moniciones facte per reuerendum dominum dominum Ricardum Kyngeston Decanum siue Custodem Capelle supradicte omnibus et singulis vicariis infra Collegium ibidem in pleno capitulo declarate in crastino Quasimodo geniti anno domini millesimo ccccmo xiiio ". f. 49. Ff. 50, 51 were both originally attached to the covers. F. 50b, which stood at the beginning of the volume, contains in a 16th cent. hand the form of the English oath "takyn byfore admyttyng any to the college, for renownsing thautoritie of the bushop of Rome" ; n.d. [circ. 1535?]. The last leaf, f. 51, contains in a late 15th cent. hand a record of a new statutory provision for the terms of Canons' residence made by Richard [Beauchamp], Bishop of Salisbury and Dean of Windsor, 15 Mar. 1478/9, Vellum ; ff. 51. 111/8 in. x 73/8 in. xv cent. (1432-1452 ?) Initials coarsely illuminated. Probably belonged to George Carew, D.D., Dean of Windsor (1568-1572, afterwards of Exeter, d. 1583), since the name of Mary Carewe is scribbled on f. 50b, and those of Mary Dowrishe and Walter Dorishe are on f. 45, and according to the Devonshire visitation of 1620 (Harleian Soc. vi, p. 93) Walter Dowrish m. Mary, sister of the Lord Carew [George, afterwards Earl of Totnes] and therefore daughter of the Dean. Its later history is uncertain, but the name Thomas Madoces is scribbled (16th-17th cent.) on f. 45, as are also the initials (17th-18th cent.) R. B. On f. 1 is a note by Francis Blomefield, the Norfolk historian, that he copied the charters on ff. 45, 45b "in Libro Extractorum, anno 1782." Rough calf binding, 18th cent., formerly falsely labelled "Statutes of the Garter."
