WODEHOUSE PAPERS. Vol. XXVI. "A true report of sundry memorable accidents befalling Mr. Daniel Archdeacon before and after the combat appointed betwene him and Franeys Moubray, written first in French by a faythfull frynd of Master Daniel Archdeacon and sent to another frind of his, and since translated into English by a wellwiller to him and to that honest cause." Signed A. D. G. Archdeacon was a native of Messina, who hearing Francis Mowbray utter threatening words against the King of Scots challenged him to a duel at Edinburgh, which was to take place 8 Jan. 1603, but Mowbray committed suicide. See Cal. State Papers, Domestic, 1623-1625, p. 545. A clue to the date appears in the mention on f. 22b of James Hay as Earl of Carlisle (cr. 1622). Besides this and the (imperfect) copy in the Public Record Office, other copies are in Harley MSS. 1285, 6213, 6495, the last written in the same hand as this MS. Paper; ff. 22. Small quarto. Circ. 1622-1625.
