Material: Parchment.

Foliation: ff i + 224. Leaves are missing after ff 45 (two), 79, 94, 150, 199, 201, 219, 223, and at the end, while ff 33, 34 should follow f 25. One unfoliated modern paper flyleaf at the end.

Dimensions: 355 x 250 mm.

Ruling: 245 x 180 mm, written in two columns, 32-32 lines per column.

Binding: 19th century red velvet binding by J. Clarke

Decoration: Illuminated head-pieces and initials, paragraph initials in gold. On f 1v is a full-page miniature, much-rubbed, of Gregory seated on Christ's right, each with a book.

Origin: Eastern Mediterranean.

Provenance:

Owned by the Karakalou Monastery on Mount Athos: ownership note, f 1v: τὸ παρόν ἀφηερώθε εἰς τὴν μονήν τοῦ Καρακάλλου, καὶ ὁ ἀπὸξενόσας ἐστω ἔνοχος ἐν τῆ γεένη τοῦ πυρός.

Acquired by Robert Curzon at the Karakalou Monastery in 1837: f i recto.

Source of Acquisition:

Add MSS 39583-39671, along with Oriental MSS 8729-8855, were bequeathed to the British Museum by Darea Curzon, Baroness Zouche (d. 1917), having been part of the collection formed at Parham, Co. Sussex, by the Hon. Robert Curzon, afterwards 14th Baron Zouche, as the result of his travels in the Levant, etc., in 1833 and later. A copy of Robert Curzon's Catalogue of Materials for Writing, ... Rolls and other Manuscripts and Oriental Manuscript Books (1849), with manuscript additions, accompanied the gift, and is now Add MS 64098.
