PARHAM MS. XLIX. PSALTER, in Latin, Gallican version, with commentary [by Petrus Lombardus, printed in Migne, Patrol. Lat. cxci. 55]. The text is interspersed in the commentary, verse by verse, in larger script. Preface beg. (slightly imperf. through mutilation of f. 1) " [Cum omnes] prophetas spiritus sancti reuelatione constet esse locutos "; commentary, " Beatus . . . Cui omnia omnia (sic) optata succedunt " (f. 2). Marginal notes throughout, in various hands (many in plummet, erased). The marginal signs d.m., d.n., n.d., are frequently used. The first stands doubtless for da memoriae (see Harley MS. 3074, f. 51) and occurs in Arundel 45 (10th cent.) and many English 12th cent. MSS. The others are perhaps for debet notari and notare debes (e.g. f. 5, " Istoriam hanc n.d."). Vellum ; ff. i + 244 + 1* + l**. 14 7/8 in. x 9 3/4 in. XII-XIII cent., written in Italy. Gatherings of 8 leaves (last4), with signatures and catchwords, the latter sometimes cut away ; quires xi, xii (ff. 89-96, 81-88) transposed. Double columns of 50 (ff. 1-136 b) or 56 (ff. 137-243 b) Sec. fol. " merito. De ordine." Fully illuminated initials of good Italian execution, in gold, very dark blue and other colours, to Pss. i, xxvi, xxxviii , lii, lxviii, lxxx, xcvii, cix (ff. 2, 45b, 71, 86, 117b, 143b, 165, 186), with smaller ones for some of the later psalms ; large ornamental initials in red, white and blue, sometimes with elaborate prolongations (e.g. ff. 44, 52) to the other psalms. In the margins are many coloured figuredrawings,in cruder style, illustrating the text. Two large illuminated initials (ff. 1*, l**), cut from another Italian MS. of the same period, have been laid down on ff. 1, 1 b, the original initial having been cut out. Binding of dressed skin, marbled, gilt-stamped on covers with a festoon border and on back with the arms of Pope Pius VI (1775-1799), cf. J. Guigard, Nouvel Armorial du Bibliophile, i, 1890, p. 218).
