PARHAM MS. Ll. BREVIARY of the use of the Benedictine Congregation of St. Justina of Padua (known from 1504 as the Cassinese Congregation), probably from the Abbey of S. Giorgio Maggiore at Venice, see art. 3 below. Contents :-
1. " Psalterium monasticum " : the psalms arranged for use ill choir, with antiplhons, hymns, canticles, etc. f. 1.
2. " Septem psalmi penitenitiales " (opening words only,) and Litany. Among other saints not invoked in the printed Cassinese Breuiarium monasticum (Venice, 1542) is Zeno, bishop [of Verona ?] and confessor. f. 77 b.
3. " Proprium sanctorum totius anni including (f. 179 b) a collect for St. Cosmas, confessor and hermit [in Crete, d. at Venice, translated in 1058 to the Abbey of S. Giorgio Maggiore, see F. Corner, Notizie storiche delle chiese e monasteri di Venezia., 1758, p. 469], who is not commemorated in the 1542 edition, and (f. 189 b) a much more elaborate office than in that edition for SS. Cosmas and Damian, with a miniature of their martyrdom. A leaf is wanting after f. 133 ; f. 134 beg. " decorasti. et qui nos famulos tuos sacris sanctorum corporum patrociniis sublimasti," in a collect [for the Translation of SS. Cosmas and Damian at S. Giorgio Maggiore ? See Corner, op. cit. p. 474, and cf. Acta SS., 10 May, pp. 414-5]. f. 81.

5. "Officium beate Marie uirginis secundum morem curie Romane cum aliquibus additamentis secundum consuetudinem congregationis monachorum de obseruantia sancte Iustine seu unitatis ordinis sancti Benedicti." f. 251 b.

7. Communion and unction of the sick, commendation, and burial, followed by " Forma absolutionis in articulo mortis " and benedictions. f. 258 b. Inserted at the end are four detached leaves from a late 15th cent. Horae, containing Memoriae of SS. John the Baptist, Thomas Aquinas, Francis, and Mary Magdalene, with miniatures of the last two and of SS. John the Evangelist (?) and Dominic. ff. 272-275 b. Vellum; ff. i + 275. 5 3/4 in. x 4 in. (ff. 272-275, 5 3/8 in. x 3 7/8 in.). Late XV cent. Gatherings of 10 leaves (xiv wants a leaf, xxii4 ending art. 3, last4). Fully illuminated borders, fairly well executed in North Italian style (foliage-scrolls with flowers, gilt studs, etc., and medallions enclosing hind, hare, butterfly, etc.), with historiated initials on ff. 1, 81, 189 b, and 218; f. 189 b has also a half-page miniature of the martyrdom of SS. Cosmas and Damian (see art. 3 above). Decorative initials, sometimes with border-prolongations, and flourished initials in blue, red, and purple, throughout. Bound in brown goatskin, with gilt-tooled border of an arabesque repeatpattern (probably Italian, 17-18th cent.). Curzon Cat., MSS. in Latin, no. 8 (pencil numbering 56).
