PARHAM MS. LII. MISSAL, in Latin, of a monastery (rubric " in medio monasterii," f. 20 b) in or near Liége (see below, artt. 1, 2, 4). Music in neums. Contents:-
1. Temporale, Christmas-Trinity, including the Purification, St. Valentine, and the Annunciation, but omitting the Sundays and feriae between Epiphany and Holy Saturday and between Easter Wednesday and the Vigil of the Ascension. There is a strong resemblance (despite many variations in detail) to the later Liége use as shown in the printed Missale Leodiensis ecclesie (Spires, 1502). In particular, the following unusual sequences are common to both:-
-(a) Christmas High Mass, " Ecce iam uotiua (Chevalier, Repert. Hymnol., no. 5136). f. 8 ;-
-(b) St. Stephen, "Vnus amor et una concordia " (Chev. 20876). f. 11 ; -
-(c) St. John, "Laus gloria uirtus " (Chev. 10515). f. 13;-
-(d) Easter Day, "Eia dic nobis " (Chev. 5285). f. 37 b ;-
-(e) Easter Tuesday, "Sancta cunctis leticia " (Chev. 18371). f. 44. Imperf., wanting a quire after f. 32 (Holy Saturday, cf. Miss. Leod., sig. oi-oiii b). f. 1.
2. " Preparationes sacerdotis missam celebrantis " : prayers to be said by the priest " quando caput pectit," etc. (as in Missale Leod., f. 7). Followed by the Ordinary (f. 72), Prefaces (f. 75), and Canon (f. 77 b) and conclusion of the Mass. Many of the rubrics are in the second person (e.g. " Item die iunctis manibus," " Hic eleua calicem," f. 73 b), a peculiarity also found in Missale Leod. (sig. a 2, etc.). f. 71.
3. Masses for the Dead and other votive Masses, with the " Gloria in excelsis " (farced by a later hand for feasts of the Virgin, cf. Missale Leod., sig. a1 v, and Cath. Encycl. vi. 584) and Nicene Creed. f. 86 b.
4. Sanctorale, Nicholas-Andrew. Including George, Remaclus, and Lambert, patrons of Liége (ff. 124, 164, 169 b), and commemorations of Oda, widow, patroness of Amay near Liége (f. 180), and Trudo, founder of St. Trond abbey, between Liége and Louvain (f. 186 b). The secret for St. Hubert invokes the merits " beatissimi patroni nostri Hugberti " (f. 184). The sequence for All Saints, " Resultet tellus " (f. 183, Chev. 17365), is also in Missale Leod. Imperf., wanting two leaves after f. 129 and one leaf after f. 142 (cf. Miss. Leod., sig. dd. viii-ee. ii, ff. vii-ff. viii b). f. 108.
5 (inserted on four blank pages between Valentine and Cathedra Petri in art. 4). " Missa de S. Maria," " pro infirmo," and " de necessitate." ff. 119 b-121.
6. Commune Sanctorum. f. 191. Vellum; ff. iv + 192. 9 1/4 in. x 5 1/2 in. XII cent., in several hands, with additions xiii-xv centt. Gatherings of 8 leaves (a quire lost between iv and v, viii 9, ix 6, x 6, xi 10, xii 6, xiii 9, xiv 4, xv 10, xvi 7, xvii 10 wanting two leaves, xviii 9, xix 2, a leaf lost between xix and xx, xxii 10, xxiii 3, xxiv 2, xxv 2, xxvi 10, xxvii 7). The 15th century foliation shows that the missing leaves (see above, artt. 1, 4) had already gone. Headings in red, initials in red or blue. A coloured drawing of the Crucifixion with Flemish inscriptions (15th cent., inferior work), has been laid down on f. 77. On ff. iii, iv are notes by R. Curzon on the contents and supposed age of the MS. Modern binding of blue velvet. Not entered in Curzon Cat.
